DANIEL E. ALVES SR., 83, of Rowe Avenue, a retired chief steward, died yesterday at Haven Health Center.

He was the husband of Maria G. (Gomes) Alves. Born in Brava, Cape Verde, a son of the late Fortunato and Filomina (Socorro) Alves, he came to this country many years ago. He had lived in Boston and East Providence before moving to Pawtucket in 1971.

Mr. Alves had worked for Exxon Corp. for more than 25 years before retiring as chief steward in 1982.

He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

He enjoyed photography and gardening.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Bernadette M. Ziegler of Glocester; a son, Daniel E. Alves Jr. of Pawtucket; two brothers, Albert Socorro of Brockton, Mass., and John Lomba in Maine; two sisters, Eugenie Soares in Florida and Mary Alves of New Bedford, Mass.; and four grandchildren. He was the twin brother of the late Adinario Alves.

The funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from the William W. Tripp Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Teresa Church, 358 Newport Ave. Burial will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery.
