August J. Vieira


 NEW BEDFORD -- August J. Vieira, 73, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Marie D. (Fortes) Vieira. 
 Born in New Bedford, son of the late Joao and Gertrude (Almeida) Vieira, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life and was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. 
 Mr. Vieira was formerly employed as a rigger in the Merchant Marines for 20 years and later worked at the Quincy Shipyard until its closing. He then was employed by the New Bedford Public Works Department until he retired. 
 He was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association, the United Social Club, the Merchant Mariners Club, and the Union Lodge No. 4 F.&A.M. 
 He served in the American Merchant Marine Service during World War II, and later in the Army from 1955 to 1957. 
 Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Rosemarie Sanchez of New Bedford; two stepchildren, Patricia M. Burke of Jacksonville, Fla., and Joseph J. Barros of Tiburon, Calif.; a brother, Joseph J. Vieira of New Bedford; a sister, Mary G. Santos of New Bedford; a granddaughter, Maureen Burnett of New Bedford; a stepgranddaughter, Lamie Lee Bookman of New Bedford; a great-granddaughter, Breanne Sanchez of New Bedford; three step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. 
 He was also the brother of the late Amelia Lopes, Antone Vieira and Manuel Lopes. 
 His Mass will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow in Our Lady of the Assumption Church with burial in St. John's Cemetery; arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for
