WALTER BAPTISTE SR. 

 NEW BEDFORD -- Walter Baptiste, Sr., 82, of Wareham, died Friday, June 14, 2002, in St. Luke's Hospital after an illness. He was the husband of Matilda E. (Pires) Baptiste. 
Born in Taunton, the son of the late Albert and Mary (Barber) Baptiste, he lived in Wareham all of his life and attended local schools. 
 Mr. Baptiste was a World War II veteran, serving as a staff sergeant in the Army. 
He was a member of the Dudley Brown Post Veterans of Foreign Wars in Onset and the William E. Carter Post Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mattapan. 
He was a road construction laborer for the Donald Martin Construction Company and the Campanella and Cardi Construction Company before retiring. 
Survivors include his widow; a son, Walter Baptiste, Jr. of Brockton; a daughter, Marilyn Pina of East Wareham; three brothers, Robert Barber of Boston, John Barber of Hattisburg, Miss., and Edward Gomes of Onset; a sister, Lillian Baptiste of Onset; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. 
He was the father of the late Richard Baptiste and Delores Agee, brother of the late James Barber and Arthur Baptiste and Margaret Gomes. 
 A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Patrick's Church, High Street, Wareham. 
 Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery. 
 Arrangements are by the Stott, Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28).
