He was the husband of Daminga R. (Nunes) Barboza and son of the late Bonaventura Barboza and Laura (Perry) Barboza. He was born in New Bedford and was a photographer for The Cape Verdean News for 15 years. He retired as a maintenance worker at Sears at the North Dartmouth Mall. He was a musician with the Five-O's and later as a one-man band, Jay-Bee, playing at nursing homes and for the elderly. He was a lifetime member of the Musicians Union, Cape Verdean Veterans, United Social Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fort Phoenix Post 2892. Mr. Barboza was the founder of the Merchant Mariners Club and worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He served in the Army as a technician fifth class during World War II. Survivors include his widow; two sons, Manuel Barboza of South Carolina and John Barboza Jr. of Portsmouth, R.I.; a brother, Isadore Barboza of New Bedford; two sisters, Stella De Pina of New Bedford and Laura Baptiste of East Freetown; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Barboza was the brother of the late Lucy Fonseca, George Barboza, Manuel Barboza and Bonaventura "Benny" Barboza. He also was the father of the late Walter Barboza. His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, New Bedford. Arrangements are by the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., New Bedford. |
