AUGUST R. GOMES

NEW BEDFORD -- August R. Gomes, 84, of New Bedford died after a brief illness Thursday, March 3, 2005, surrounded by his family, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Florence A. (Almeida) Gomes.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Henry and Virginia (Rodericks) Gomes, he lived in Acushnet, East Providence, R.I., and New Bedford. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
He worked for International Laborers Union Local 385 for many years until he retired.
Mr. Gomes served in the Army during World War II.
He enjoyed gardening, mechanics and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his widow; three sons, Paul Almeida and his wife, Theresa, and David Gomes, all of New Bedford, and Henry Gomes and his companion, Diane, of Fairhaven; a daughter, Kathleen Gomes-Counts, and her husband, Paul, of New Bedford; a daughter-in-law, Evadney Almeida of New Bedford; a sister, Florinda Lopes of East Providence; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Peter Almeida, and the brother of the late Jenevena Andrade, Matilda Gonsalves, Evelyn Gomes, Jennie Gomes, Mary Gomes, George Gomes, Alfred Gomes, John Gomes, Levi Gomes, Antone Gomes, Milton Gomes, Melvin Gomes and Jimmy Gomes.
His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.
