Robert S. Correia COLUMBUS, Ga. -- A full military funeral service was held for retired Sergeant First Class Robert S. Correia, 59, of Columbus, who died at home unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 1, 1999. He was the husband of Rebecca A. Correia and son of Alice (Sylvia) Saya of New Bedford and the late Jose J. Correia.
He was born in New Bedford and lived in Columbus since 1976.
He was a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army until his retirement in 1977.
Mr. Correia was a magna cum laude graduate of Troy State University. While in the service, he was a member of the 25th Infantry and was awarded the Military Order of the Purple Heart, The Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, along with numerous unit citations and the Silver Star.
Survivors include his wife and mother; a son, Anthony R. Correia of Columbus, Ga.; a step daughter, Sonya Shelton of Columbus; two brothers, Carlos D. Correia of New Bedford and Gus Botelho of Port Orange, Fla.; two sisters, Patricia Magan of New Bedford and Linda Vasconcellos of Guilford, N.H.; a step grandson, Justin Shelton of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road, Columbus.
