Born in Wareham, he was a graduate of Wareham High School, attended Rhode Island Technical Institute in Providence, R.I., and Refrigeration, Television and Air Conditioning School in Boston. He was a communicant of St. Patrick Church and had lived in New Bedford for more than 30 years in Wareham. A Vietnam Veteran, he received The Purple Heart for wounds received during combat and was commander of the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Nunes was well known for his auto body work and mechanical skills. He also did advertising for many small business throughout the area. Survivors include his widow; two sons, Donald Nunes of Wareham and Samuel C. Nunes Jr. of New Bedford; a stepson, Ernest Pina of New Bedford; four daughters, Karen O'Riley, Ann Gibbons, Samantha Pina, all of New Bedford, and Nichole Nunes of Boston, four brothers, Michael Nunes, Edward Nunes, Manuel Rozario and August Nunes Jr., all of New Bedford; five sisters, Mary Ellen Nunes, Rose Marie Pollard, Brenda Christen, all of New Bedford, Mariah Bennett Haver of Lynn and Darlene Veira of Wareham; his paternal grandfather, John Silva, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the grandson of the late Frank and Mary B. (Silva) Mott and Joseph and Adeline Nunes. Arrangements are by Austin-Carney Funeral Home, 549 County St. |
