Joseph J. Baptista, 96


 DARTMOUTH -- Joseph John Baptista, 96, of Dartmouth died at home, Saturday, May 16, 1998. He was the husband of Evelyn (Morse) Baptista
and son of the late John and Rosa (Martin) Baptista. 
 He was born in Brava, Cape Verde, and lived in this area most of his life. 
 He formerly was a steward for Standard Oil Tanker. 
 Mr. Baptista was a chief cook in the Merchant Marines during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the National Maritime Union. 
 Survivors include his widow; four daughters, Irene Kotlowski of Milwaukee, Rosa Baptista of Pawtucket, R.I., and Ruth Gomes and Patricia Perry, both of New Bedford; two sons, John Baptista of Puerto Rico and John August of San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter 
 The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. 
 Arrangements are by the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St.
