JOHN M. ALLEMAO 


 ACUSHNET -- John M. Allemao, 85, of Acushnet died at home Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, surrounded by his family after a long illness. He was the husband of Lillian (Lima) Allemao; they were married 54 years. 

    Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Manuel A. and Zulmira (Duarte) Allemao, he had lived the past 79 years in Acushnet. 

    He was educated in the New Bedford school system, graduating from high school in 1939 after leaving for two years to help support his family. He was drafted in 1943 to serve in World War II and was involved in five different campaigns, becoming a first sergeant. 

    At the end of the war, he was released to the Army Reserves and served in the Korean Conflict, retiring as a chief warrant officer 4 in 1978. 

    Mr. Allemao was a shipping supervisor at Colonial Textile and retired from Grinnell Pajamas as a shipping supervisor in 1987. 

    He was a member of the Portuguese American Veterans, the American Association of Retired Persons, American Legion, Retired Officers Association, the Military Order of World Wars, Cape Verdean Association and the National Association of Uniform Services. 

    He was past commander of the East Freetown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6643 and past commander of the Greater New Bedford Veterans Association. 

    Survivors include his widow; three daughters, Darleen Hall of Wareham, and Rita Yell and Genevieve Florent and her husband, Bruce, all of New Bedford; seven grandchildren, Stephen, John, Todd Hicks, Beth Ripley and her husband, Michael, Robbin Sousa and her husband, Mario, Sheri Braga and her husband, Miguel, and Nicholas Yell and his wife, Barbara; two sisters, Juliana Silva of Acushnet and Priscilla Walker and her husband, Phillip, of El Paso, Texas; two brothers, Jose Allemao of Acushnet and Manuel Allemao and his wife, Rita, of Freetown; three nephews; and a niece. He was the brother of the late Luis, Amelia, Laura, Antonio, Daniel, Ernesto and Julia Allemao. 

    His funeral service will be at 10:15 a.m. tomorrow at Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. 

    Burial will be in Veterans National Cemetery, Bourne.
