The student action team consisted of four core members. All of the women who participated in this project were credential students at California State University, Fullerton enrolled in a bilingual credential program.
Stephanie Valenzuela Ibarra is currently partaking in Cal State Fullerton’s Multiple Subject Credential/BCLAD program. She is the student representative of block 15 and represents her fellow cohort on the student advisory board. Before attending CSUF Stephanie worked under Mayor Antonillo R. Villaraigosa as an aide in the department of Neighborhood and Community Services. Stephanie obtained a Bachelors of Arts from the University of California Los Angeles; she majored in Political Science with an emphasis in the political economy of Latin America. While at UCLA, Stephanie participated in educational outreach programs and was a mentor to two elementary school students who lived and attended school in the lower socioeconomic sector of north Hollywood. She was elected to coordinate a community project for Americorps/BruinCorps in which she and other AmeriCorps/BruinCorps members raised funds and built a community reading garden for the inner-city students of Playa Del Rey Elementary School in the city of Culver. Stephanie’s passion for teaching and mentoring inner-city children lead her to receive two consecutive scholarships from UCLA’s Educators for Tomorrow Scholarship foundation.
Ingrid X. Perez graduated from California State University, Fullerton with a Bachelor of Science in Child Development. She is fluent in Spanish and English. In the future she hopes are to make a difference in the lives of children, create opportunities for them to thrive to their full potential, serve and assist with resources that will benefit their success in education. Her career goal is to be the best teacher that she can be and help and work with others to make sure students are receiving the best education. Her experiences with children have provided her with tools that have enhanced her development as a teacher.
Monica Diaz graduated from California State University, Fullerton in 2004 with a bachelor in Communications. She returned to school to obtain a multiple subject teaching credential, which will be awarded in May of 2009. She is a native Spanish speaker, and enjoys working with students who are also native Spanish speakers. She is hoping to find a carreer in education where she is able to promote a positive, interactive learning experience for all students.
Gabriela Liceaga Reyes, a daughter of a wonderful mother and sister of three younger siblings. She proudly received her Bachelor of Science Degree at California State University, Fullerton in May 2007 with the major of Child and Adolescent Development. She has always wanted to serve the community so she decided to become a teacher. More than a teacher, she wants to be an advocate for those who do not receive a higher education. She has already served children as a tutor, instructional assistant, and substitute teacher in grades Pre-K through 12. Her willingness to serve the community and her pride in her strong Mexican roots will hopefully open more doors. With dedication, commitment, and a genuine interest in the area of education and children she will continue to make a difference.
