Canterbury Business Students Win Provincial Top Honours

Four Canterbury Business students won provincial awards in the Ontario Business Educators Association's (OBEA) annual subject contests.  These are competitions open to students across the province in each of the Business subject areas.  The top entries from each class are sent in by the teacher to the provincial assocation to be judged against the best in Ontario.  Winners were recognized at an the OBEA awards banquet in Toronto.  The Cantebury students were as follows:

 

Garrigue Srna - 3rd place in Web Page Development Contest - Junior Division

 

Caitlyn Wilson, Lena Elchamaa and Corina Wan - 3rd place in Desktop Publishing Contest - Senior Division

 

Corina Wan - 1st place in Web Page Development Contest - Senior Division

MEI is pleased to announce Samantha Omand i s the recipient of the Outstanding Student Award!

 

MEI International Academy is proud to announce that  Samantha Omand  from  Canterbury  HS has received the MEI Outstanding Student Award for credits she earned while studying overseas this summer. The annual award recognizes academic excellence, leadership, a consistently positive and inspiring attitude and a dedication to the well-being and growth of others.  

 

This summer  Samantha  was chosen as one of our top students from across Canada for her commitment, dedication and boundless energy. 

 

In recognition of her hard work and efforts, MEI is pleased to award  Samantha  a $5000 Scholarship towards the Spring 2011 Semester Program.

 

Attached to this email is an announcement which could be placed on an awards board, in your school newspaper or digital newsletter.  Samantha  made an outstanding contribution to her group’s overall experience and we hope this announcement will honour her hard work and accomplishments!

Monies raised for Hopewell Eating Disorder Program

 

Social Awareness Committee: $4,000

Flora MacDonald: Future Generations: Afghanistan

 

Starting within 48 hours of the event, Canterbury students collected - in only 3 days - over $5,000 to assist the victims of the Haiti earthquake; much of this was matched by the government of Canada.

 

Otto Hall – Student lead in raising $12,000 at the Bows and Butterflies evening to support the Royal Ottawa Hospital Adolescent Program for Mental Health.

Communications Technology Achievements

Grade 12 Comtech Students Jeffrey Burge, Alexandra Georgaras, Fiona Sauder, Vanessa Caicedo and Gareth Imrie won top honours in a nation-wide student video contest staged by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.  The annual competition is designed to raise awareness among Canadian youth of the importance of safe use of the Internet as part of the "Think Before You Click" identity protection initiative.

      Honourable Mention: Carleton University High School Writing Contest 2009 and earning a renewable scholarship to the University of King's College worth $3000/ year.

 

Rebecca Campagna

      Scholarship and acceptance for English BA at Carleton University, $2000.00

 

Becca Johnston

      Mount Allison university offered an $6000 scholarship over four years, which she will be accepting, and Carleton offered her an $8000 scholarship which she won't be accepting.

Business Department Achievements

We had 2 groups of students totaling 17 students, staff from our Business (taking the lead - Cheryl Taylor), Science, Communications Technology and support from BLT through Bruce Summers taking part. How is that for connecting the dots in School Improvement opportunities!!!!

We were the sole representatives from Canada.

Last evening we received news from the Chair of International Judging panel in England that Canterbury High School placed 2nd in the international competition after an Australia team and followed by a South African team.

Furthermore, Canterbury has been invited to partake in a follow up global challenged being hosted in Bali, Indonesia (although through the internet!!!) in June.

      Dance Department hosted two feeder school concerts performing in front of a total of 1000 elementary students from across the OCDSB

      2010 Dance Night “IMPUSE” performed over two nights was a huge success.  

      Dance students participated in OCDSB dance showcase at Woodroofe High School

      Dance students travel to Cornwall to perform in the 2010 Step Into Motion Festival

      Students will perform for the V.P. Conference/ Lead the Way in May

The Canterbury Girls Hockey Team reached a milestone this season, celebrating our 10th year. The varsity team brings together players from all grades who love hockey and represent CHS with great hockey and fantastic spirit.

Visual Arts Achievements

Students in grade 12 Visual Arts / Photography have won the Grand Prize for digital photography in the 3rd Annual Nikon Secondary School Digital Photo Contest (co-sponsored by Henry's Canada).

 

This contest was open to all students enrolled in Secondary School Photography courses throughout Canada.  Over 1000 entries were submitted.  Canterbury was awarded the top school prize ($500 worth of Nikon equipment) as the school with the most images to make the judges final selection list of 40 entries.

 

Erika Van der Pas, Anna Cumyn, and Emma Fowler were among the top twelve finalists and will receive prizes for honourable mention. A presentation for the winners was held at the Photographic, Video & Digital Imaging Show in the International Centre, Mississauga on Saturday May 15th, 2010.
