The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are particularly attractive to North American applicants - 48 US students received these awards in 2007.

You apply to a college which usually provides accommodation, food and supervision of your studies. The university is responsible for providing lectures. So, at lectures there will be attendees from various colleges.
