Kingsbury Station, 1933, and now.
Kingsbury Station, 1933, and now.
Kingsbury's "High Street" is an entirely 1930's suburban development. When the Metropolitan Railway announced plans in 1929 to build a branch line from Wembley Park to Stanmore there were just two farms along this western end of Kingsbury Road. By the time the railway (now part of London Underground's Jubilee Line) opened in December 1932, parades of shops were being built along both sides of the road, with the Gore Farm and Valley Farm housing estates already partly-built behind them. When the black and white photograph was taken in the summer of 1933, the station building itself had a tobacconist's shop and a W.H.Smith newsagents on either side of its entrance, with a dentist's surgery on the first floor. To the left of the station, work on Grand Parade was nearing completion, while opposite, Station Parade included an Express Dairies shop, a butcher's and a Post Office in Carr's newsagents. In 1934 an Odeon Cinema was built next to Station Parade, which remained until the 1970's, when it was demolished to make way for a Sainsbury's supermarket. This closed in 1997, after the retailer had opened superstores in Kenton and West Hendon, and the premises are now an Aldi supermarket with a Fitness First health club above.
