March 2009 Updates

posted ‎‎Mar 9, 2009 1:59 PM‎‎ by Morgan Lucas   [ updated ‎‎Mar 9, 2009 2:03 PM‎‎ ]

Hello Friends,

Much has happened with Campus Kiva since our last update and we have quite a bit of exciting news to share with you! With 7 incredible new chapters in the last month, new partnerships, and plenty of activities planned for the future, Campus Kiva is expanding faster than ever!

 Welcome to our Newest Chapters

Campus Kiva is now present at 6 new schools in the US and one in Canada. With these additions, we now have 40 chapters around the world, which means we can make more of an impact than ever. Welcome to the following schools:

 Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Lehigh University

Luther College

Sonoma State University

University of California, Davis

University of North Carolina, Wilmington

University of Toronto, Scarborough

What is even more amazing is that two of these chapters have already produced  publicity for their organizations. At Sonoma State, the new chapter was featured with an article in the Sonoma State Star (click here to see the article: http://www.sonomastatestar.com/home/index.cfm?event=displayArticle&uStory_id=3c4edc8d-13bb-46d0-ab2e-2fc0540f6dd6).

We also want to share the fantastic website created by Luther College Kiva. At the top right is a very powerful video that the group produced. We strongly encourage you to watch it, we know you’ll be impressed! Here’s the link: https://sites.google.com/a/luther.edu/kiva/.

The April Month of Action and Gumball Challenge

Throughout the month of April, Campus Kiva chapters in the US and Canada will be competing against one another to show their ingenuity and entrepreneurial ability in the first ever Campus Kiva Gumball Challenge. It will be a great way to make a presence on campus and strengthen your club while changing lives. We already have close to 15 schools participating, so don’t miss out! For more information, see the attached flier or email Sasha@campuskiva.org.

We’ll be creating an open forum on the Campus Kiva website so be sure to stay tuned for all the latest buzz.

The Month of Action Resource

At the end of April, we’ll be collecting all of the ideas that chapters came up with for the Gumball Challenge and putting them into a loan-raising manual for all schools to use. Even if you are not participating in the challenge, we want your ideas, so be sure to email them to Dennis@campuskiva.org.

Partnership Updates and Opportunities

One Hen: Teaching the Power of Microfinance in Local Schools

One Hen is the story of a West African boy, Kojo, who receives a small loan to buy a hen, and takes flight as an entrepreneur. He moves gradually from poverty to well-being to provider, creating opportunities for others. It’s the story of how the world undergoes change, one person, one family, and one community at a time.

Since its publication, One Hen has evolved from an inspirational story, to a service-learning tool. Teachers, librarians, and other school community leaders in the US, Canada, and the UK are using One Hen to teach math, social studies, reading, world resources and more through the lenses of financial literacy, youth entrepreneurship, youth philanthropy and global citizenship.

Campus Kiva is pleased to announce that we will be partnering with One Hen to provide opportunities for our chapters to get more involved in their communities by teaching the One Hen story in local schools. In the Spring and Fall, we will be piloting the program at about 5 schools. Don’t miss out on the chance to participate!

For more information about One Hen, visit their website, www.onehen.org, and for more information about how your campus can get involved, email Morgan@campuskiva.org.

Members in Action!

Last month, Campus Kiva members took advantage of two of our fantastic partnership programs, Young People For and Starting Bloc.

Julie Palm from Davidson College attended the Young People For National Summit in Washington DC, where she had the opportunity to meet others who are interested in poverty alleviation and to learn tactics to help her chapter grow. What’s more is that Julie will now be eligible for additional funding for her club.

During the Summit, Young People For features non-profit organizations that empower students to make a difference. While representing Campus Kiva, I got the chance to meet Julie Palm and was surprised by the amount of interest that we got from people who wanted to find a chapter at their school! Stay tuned next year for the chance to become a Young People For fellow!

Esha Chhabra, our East Coast Regional Director, was able to attend the Starting Bloc conference in Boston over President’s Day Weekend. While there, she learned about some of the cutting edge developments in the field of socially responsible businesses and got to a diverse group of people also working in the field of microfinance. Later in the Spring, Campus Kiva members from Bucknell University will also be attending this conference. Starting Bloc is held three times a year in the US and London, so be sure to look out for announcements regarding the next conferences!

February 2009 Chapter of the Month: Chapman University

With February being the month of Valentine’s Day, students at Chapman University wanted to show the world that they care. From February 8th-14th, the chapter hosted a “Spread the Love” loan-raiser where they successfully made Kiva.org the homepage for library computers around campus, giving students a new way to truly make a difference.

Congratulations Chapman for an excellent event!

 News from Kiva

“There has been no drop-off in lending in early 2009.  In fact, many indicators are looking quite positive.  Versus this time last year, loan volume is up 50%, new users are up 25% and traffic is up by 100% and appears to be trending upwards.

Overall, we should be proud of our success so far in 2009.  In a few months where the world seemed to be falling apart, Kiva has been surging.  We had our best month ever, in terms of loan volume, in February.   We are thrilled that Kiva is already becoming a "remarkable counterexample" to all the bad news we are seeing around the world this year.”

- Matt Flannery, Kiva CEO

As always, thank you for your continued support!

Plans for the Next Half of the School Year

Over the next few months, Campus Kiva will be making a strong effort to engage our chapters in various activities and to provide opportunities for involvement with both Kiva and Campus Kiva. Included below is information about the Gumball Challenge, the MIT Ideas Competition and Women’s Entrepreneur event, the Campus Kiva Speaker’s Bureau, our fellowship programs, and some open positions with Campus Kiva.

Gumball Challenge
As you may remember, Campus Kiva has entered into a close partnership with Gumball Capital. Throughout the month of April, we will be running the Gumball Challenge at many of our campuses. If you are a chapter leader, you will be getting an email from Dennis or Esha with more details. This is an incredible opportunity to run a well-tested loan raising activity, and by participating, chapters will receive a great deal of assistance from the Campus Kiva team and from Gumball Challenge.

In connection with the challenge, we will be launching a blog on the website that will be devoted to the event. The blog will be a great place for chapters to discuss relevant questions and to get to know what others are doing. Even if you are not participating in the challenge, check out the blog atwww.campuskiva.org/opportunities.

Campus Kiva Speakers Bureau
Many of our chapters have requested speakers for events they are having on campus. We are also getting a number of requests for Campus Kiva representatives to speak at various forums and microfinance events. Therefore, we have decided to launch the Camus Kiva Speakers Bureau to accommodate these requests.

The program will consist of professionals and representatives from Kiva and some of our partner organizations, as well as a selection of students from our chapters. By participating in the program, you will have the chance to attend conferences and events and will be trained as a representative of Campus Kiva.

If you are interested in this program, please email a short paragraph about yourself to Morgan@campuskiva.org.

MIT Ideas Competition
Are you interested in solving real world microfinance problems? If so, consider taking part in the MIT Ideas Competition. Participants will have the chance to learn about the challenges of microfinance and to contribute their ideas to the field. There is a monetary prize associated with the challenge, which takes place in March. For more information, please visit the Campus Kiva website or see the attached flyer.

MIT’s Celebrate Women Entrepreneurs Event
Anyone in the Boston area is invited to attend this special event to celebrate women entrepreneurs on Tuesday, February 3. If you will be in the area and would like more information, please let us know.

Fellowship Programs
In February, our partner organizations, Starting Bloc and Young People For, are holding conferences for their fellowship programs. We have a few Campus Kiva members attending both of these events and we cannot wait to hear their feedback!

There will be a new round of Starting Bloc fellows later in the semester, so if you are interested in learning more about the program, please let us know.

Join the Campus Kiva Team!
Campus Kiva is looking for a few qualified people to be part of our team. As a Campus Kiva officer, you will have a chance to work closely with some of the most active microfinance organizations and clubs.

There are no set requirements for applying. If you are interested in helping, please emailMorgan@campuskiva.org.

Chapter of the Month: Bucknell

Congratulations to Bucknell University, which we have chosen as the January 2009 chapter of the month. Bucknell has been incredibly active over the last year and has already raised over $1,000 in loans. In the fall, they hosted Kiva co-founder Jessica Flannery for an event on campus and their work has been featured inPennsylvania’s Daily Item.

Bucknell has also developed an excellent web site about their chapter:http://www.orgs.bucknell.edu/mib/index.html

Keep up the good work!!

Thanks for your continued support!

Therefore, I want to take a moment to discuss what's been happening over the past month.

Lending Teams Update

Since the Lending Teams launch at the end of August, over 1,200 teams have already started, and over 140 teams are in the College/University category.  Not all of them have official Campus Kiva chapters at their schools, so we'll be trying to identify leaders to start clubs at those campuses.

As of end Sept 17, chapter teams currently have 158 members. It would be awesome to crack 350 members by this time next month. To do that, each chapter needs to double its membership or, for small teams, recruit five new members. We'll be sending out a spreadsheet to chapter leaders with each chapter's target.

*If you are starting a lending team, please select 'College/University' for your category (rather than alumni or club) - it is possible to change this after the fact.

Campus Kiva Website

As of last week, Campus Kiva has its own domain name (www.campuskiva.org),  that will be linked to its lending team on the Kiva website. While the page is not yet functional, we hope to have it up and running sometime in the next month. The goal of the site is to create a central place for members to access documents such as the starter kit, other promotional materials, and the educational resources we are now compiling. Furthermore, we hope to create a space where chapters can connect with one another, so we will be including a section where chapters can share their thoughts, experiences and ideas with others. The site will also have links to each of our chapter's lending team's page and to the Campus Kiva page on the main Kiva site (www.kiva.org/about/campuskiva, which will be up shortly).

If you have any ideas or suggestions for what else should be contained on the site, please let me know!

Our Partners and Opportunities

This month, we have quite a few opportunities for further involvement with Campus Kiva and our partners. Campus Kiva is looking for some good people to fill a few open positions. We also want to tell you a little more about the Kiva Fellows program and share two opportunities with our partner organizations.

Campus Kiva Openings:

Since Campus Kiva is growing so quickly, our team is in need of a few more people! Right now, we are looking to fill three positions:

West Coast Regional Director: This person will be in charge of maintaining contact with all of our West Coast chapters. This position consists of checking in with chapter leaders periodically and making sure each of them knows about the latest Campus Kiva programs.

Web Development Director: With the addition of the Campus Kiva website, we are looking for someone who can help build and maintain the site. This person must have an adequate knowledge of web design.

Director of Campus Outreach: There are lending teams at over 110 schools, yet only 25 of them have Campus Kiva chapters on campus. We are looking for someone who can help identify leaders at the schools that currently do not have clubs. This person will need to continually check the "colleges/universities" lending teams category and contact those who have started lending teams.

*All of the above positions are unpaid, but by joining our team, you will be part of an exciting new organization with a growing worldwide presence. If you are interested in applying, please send me a resume with a paragraph expressing your interest (Morgan@...).

Kiva Fellows Program:

Some of you may be familiar with the Kiva Fellows program, but for those of you who aren't we wanted to talk a little about this amazing opportunity. The Kiva Fellows Program offers individuals a rare opportunity to travel abroad and witness firsthand the impact and realities of microfinance, by working directly with a host microfinance institution (MFI). Some of our chapter leaders are currently Kiva Fellows; Sanjaya Punyasena is one of them:

Sanjaya is a Kiva Fellow working in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with the microfinance institution Angkor Mikroheranhvatho Kampuchea (AMK). He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago where he concentrated in International Studies and Political Science. He has lived in the United States, Sri Lanka, and France and has been to a variety of other countries as well. Sanjaya's international volunteer experience includes helping rebuild a tsunami devastated village outside of Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka. After originally planning to stay in Cambodia until mid-September, Sanjaya has decided to stay in Cambodia at least until January. Upon his return to the states, whenever that will be, Sanjaya is planning on applying to business schools.

As a Kiva Fellow he has been working with AMK to streamline their relationship with Kiva by developing computer programs to automate the tracking and reporting of AMK's Kiva loans. In the near future, he plans on introducing his programs to other microfinance institutions to help them automate the process by which they track their Kiva loans.

Sanjaya first found out about Campus Kiva during his training as a Kiva Fellow. He thought the idea was brilliant and wanted to do anything he could to help the organization. Over the summer, he worked to establish a chapter at the University of Chicago and was the impetus behind the Kiva endowment at each school.

Over the next year, Campus Kiva will encourage its members to apply for the Kiva Fellows program and will work with students who are interested. If you would like more information, visit www.kiva.org/fellows.

Opportunities from our Partners:

Young People For (YP4): If you are a chapter leader, or are currently on campus, you should consider applying for this program. The YP4 fellowship is a leadership development program focusing on identifying, engaging, and empowering young leaders. The one-year fellowship equips college students with the skills and resources they need to create lasting change on their campuses and in their communities. Throughout the fellowship, you'll be offered financial support, technical support, and media assistance while implementing a blueprint for social justice project; launching a Campus Kiva chapter can be your project. For more information, please visit www.yp4.org, or email me.

MIT Ideas Symposium: As one of the primary goals of our program is to encourage education about microfinance, we will be participating in the MIT Ideas Symposium this April. This activity will be done in conjunction with the MircroLoan Foundation USA. Participants will research a current problem in microfinance and work with a faculty advisor to write a paper on their chosen topic. They will then have the opportunity to present their research at MIT in April. As one of our activities later in the year, Campus Kiva will be broadcasting via webcast, portions of this event to our chapters. If you would like more information about the competition, visit: web.mit.edu/ideas/.

Members Project Update

Kiva has been selected into the Top 25 projects! A second round of voting is now underway to select the Top 5. All projects that make it into the Top 5 will receive a prize, with the top prize being $1.5m. $1 donated to Kiva's Operational Expenses has led to $8 in loans.  If Kiva wins $1.5M, this could help facilitate $12M in loans!  Since the average loan per person on Kiva is $475, here is a chance to help 25,000 entrepreneurs improve their lives in just a couple of clicks!

Here's what you can do to help Kiva win:

1) Visit http://www.membersproject.com/project/view/P6KQEI

2) Click on "Vote for this Project"

3) Either choose "Cardmember Sign-In" or "Become a Card Member"

4) Spread the word! - Eg. change your email signature or your facebook status to direct people to vote

Finally, I wanted to let you know that we are working on a PowerPoint for our chapters, which will be available in the coming week or so. Once it is ready, we will send it out to each chapter leader. If you think of any other materials you may need, please let us know!

Thanks for your support!

Morgan Lucas
