As John Berry explains the circumstances of how certainty is determined, he uses a variety of rhetorical devices to characterize his point of view. The use of such an array of mechanisms puts a creative spin on scientific research. Berry displays and documents the various aspects that go into this type of research and seems to truly respect the people that work in this field. He notes that there are always two opinions in the world of scientific research and clearly portrays why his view is the correct view. Through the use of numerous rhetorical devices, John Berry perpetuates an opinion of scientific research and thoroughly describes the clarity they create.  

            Berry deigns the passage by giving a definition of what certainty is the characteristic of it, and the causes it brings about. This gives the reader a base of knowledge to which the passage is based upon. The author then moves into the requirements of being a scientist and teaches the reader what great work really goes into that profession. Berry shows the reader what respect he has for people in this field of work and in turn causes the reader to share this type of respect. Through concrete examples and comparison the reader begins to relate scientific research to their own life. As Berry analyses the various particular aspects of a scientist’s everyday life, the reader realizes how much work this type of research actually entails. The author then moves into a series of analogies that describe how each single step can mean wonders. These small steps can take them above and beyond where research has gone before or cause them to fall behind and follow on the path of others.

            In the second half of the passage, Berry begins to describe the process by which scientific research creates these paths for the rest of the public follow. He uses a series of questions to make the reader think of how all of the tools and methods they use on a daily basis came to be. He follows this by stating that the paths we use these tools for are also created by a variety of scientific research. By the end of the passage the reader is beginning to discover how important research is to their life and why the author is so intent on his opinion. The passage is then summed up through the author stating how answers must be found and how important finding those answers can be. He then ties is how certainty is what brings all of this research about.

He explains the importance of certainty and how the steps are taken to create a path to the answers. With convincing evidence, the author truly characterizes the essence of scientific research. This is a field that creates the tools and paths that lead all other people to their success.
