HIGHLAND/LOWLAND EXHIBITION
|
This exhibition was held during the Edinburgh Festival 2009 with fellow artist Claudia Massie at Flaubert Gallery, Edinburgh.
In this show Camilla explored the geography of the Lammermuir Hills, which stretch from East Lothian to the Scottish Borders, landscape ranging from high grouse moors to low lying arable farmland. She is particularly interested in the old roads and droveways which mark the hillsides, reminding us of the history of the hills and the many generations who have lived and worked the land. Her work deals with the human narrative of the land, and how it now reflects the contemporary viewer.
Camilla also uses written elements in her work, particularly from historical maps and documents. Handwriting and place names are important parts of each piece. The paintings look to the edges of traditional landscape painting, finding abstracted motifs and using strong colour to create a memorable atmosphere and a sense of timelessness. ‘I want to find the connection between the past and the present to give a genuine expression of human experience in the landscape’. |
