Erac

The Erac was an English camera that was supposed to be shaped like a pistol, but didn’t bear too much resemblance. It was made of Bakelite and appeared in 1938. It had no viewfinder. Pictures were taken by simply aiming it at the subject and pulling the trigger, so it was just as well it didn’t look too much like a pistol! As the trigger was pulled, the shutter was released. Then, as the trigger was pushed back again, the film was wound to the next frame. The 17.5mm rollfilm was actually contained inside a Merlin camera that had been made and sold independently two years previously, before being incorporated into the Erac. In the picture above, the Merlin is seen on the left.
