Introduction

If you are quality manager or simply responsible for equipment calibration and need some help, this tutorial is for you. My name is Hugo Morais and I worked several years as a technical manager of a calibration lab. I intend with this tutorial to help quality managers with their monitoring and measuring equipment calibration, explaining the diferent related concepts. It is a guide with a glossary of terms used in metrology, a method for definition of equipment maximum permissible error (to be verified after each calibration), two methods for establishment of equipment calibration intervals and finally how to analyze a calibration certificate. All the information presented is based on my experience. It is a brief description of many issues that worry quality managers before audits, regarding monitoring & testing equipment. However, I advise any reader to consult other sources of information, keeping always a critical mind. Finally, I will gladly receive any comments or corrections.

I can also provide technical assistance in controlling your
monitoring and measuring equipment (More information).

Metrology and calibration references

There are several international organisms working on metrology standards

:

Regarding metrology and calibration documents, the most useful are, in my opinion, the following:

  • Expression of the Uncertainty of Measurement in Calibration EA-4/02
  • Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM:1995)-New edition under development
  • Measurement m anagement systems - Requirements for measurement processes and measuring equipment - ISO 10012:2003
  • General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories - ISO/IEC 17025:2005
  • International vocabulary of metrology-Basic and general concepts and associated terms - ISO/IEC Guide 99:2007 (VIM )
