Hello, just a reminder that we have a cafe sci talk this Monday 4th July, at Penzance Arts club, meeting from 7pm for a 7:30pm start.  The talk is by Dr Simon Naylor from the University of Exeter's School of Geography on...

'A brief history of science in nineteenth-century Cornwall'

In this talk he will discuss the emergence of a scientific public in Cornwall in the early nineteenth century. In particular he will look at the various scientific societies that were established in towns across the county. These included the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall and the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society. He will look at the various attempts by the societies to contribute to scientific debates and to introduce science to the wider population during the Victorian period. In doing so he will consider the significance of Cornish science to scientific culture in Britain more generally. Examples will range widely, from botanical collecting, geological map-making, the study of ancient stone monuments, to weather observation.

Hope to see you there
