You don't have to go to the Arctic Circle to see Aurorae!
Many have been seen as far south as Cornwall. What causes them and when do they happen? Is there a best time to see them? How do you observe them and where can you find out when something is likely to happen?
With accompanying photos, the answers to these questions will be at this talk, along with a review of some of the local Aurorae from the past 20 years.
7 for a 7:30pm start
at: The Union Hotel, Penzance. |

Hello, here is the flyer for an event I thought you may be interested in
at Porthcurno telegraph museum on Tuesday 13th March called 'Flare
Up'. This talk is at 6pm and is about the Aurora and solar flares.
Also I mentioned at last nights cafe sci, that i was thinking of
doing a cafe sci pub quiz at our next meeting (02/04/12) and just wanted
to ask if you would be interested? If so let me know and also if you
can think of any good science questions I could include, just drop me a
line!
Looking forward to some interesting responses

Hi everyone & a Happy New Year! We are starting our cafe sci meetings next week on Monday 9th January 2012. We will meet from 7pm for a 7:30pm start in the Union Hotel, Chapel Street, Penzance. The talk is...
Geothermal energy - the
options
Our speaker, Robert Pine was the head of Camborne School of Mines (2002-2008) and
saw the transition of CSM from Pool to Tremough during this period, including
the start-up of the Renewable Energy group and degree programme.
Prior to joining CSM in 1985 he worked for 4 years on the "Hot Rocks" project
near Penryn. He is a civil engineer with a broad range of interests
in civil and mining engineering. He is now semi-retired and continues to
lecture at CSM.
He will give a broad introduction of the available options for
geothermal energy use, including: natural geothermal systems (e.g.
Iceland), heating and cooling using ground source heat pumps (e.g.
anywhere, including Cornwall) and enhanced geothermal systems / hot dry rock
(e.g. hot granites such as in Cornwall).
