Musicians to come/Musiciciens a venir
Fev 12: The Bogghoppers
The Bogghoppers are a Montreal-based acoustic trio who blend the rhythm and drive of old-time stringband music with the creativity and texture of their contemporary roots. The band is comprised of Glenn Patterson (host of the Thursday night old-time jams at Grumpy's Pub) on fiddle, Tyler Rudolph (of Vancouver's Viper Central) on vocals and banjos, and Dara Weiss (of Montreal's Yonder Hill) on vocals and guitar. Conceived by a mutual passion for open chords and rich melodic textures, their love of tradition fuels their desire to prove how current that tradition really is. Often joining forces with gigueuse and dance caller Jacynthe Guimond, they blend southern mountain music with elements of Quebecois, Cajun and Bluegrass. Whether playing a dance, a local venue or a living room in St. Henri, their apt humour, love of storytelling, and raw musical honesty give them universal appeal.
.............................. Osmosaïc is a duet made up of Mario Landry and Viviane Lamy. The acoustic guitars and the richness of vocal harmonies create the musical canevas of their hybrid folk sound. The poetical writings, in french or in english, mingle with melodies imprinted with melancoly wich sooth the soul.
Fev 26: The SleepRockers Phil Bourdon( GUITARIST) & Vinod Rao (DRUMMER) have been jamming for sometime now.
They started in august (2008) playing covers and writing the original "Don't Know Evil". Later on, Bassist Ryan Barnes joined to fill the gap. They though of the name and it started. The SleepRockers officially started their band in December of 2008. They recorded 3 tracks of different varieties searching for their own distinctive sound. For this evening the Sleep Rockers will be playing a lot 50's 60's music instead of their originals songs. If they are interested the check them out at www.myspace.com/thesleeprockers Mar 5: Bruce Murdoch
Bruce Murdoch was born in Montreal in 1947. He recorded his first songs for Electra Records in 1965: "The Singer Songwriter Project", was a collectors' item for a while, mostly because David Blue, Pat Sky and Richard Farina were on it. He did another record entitled "33 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute" for Stormy Records in 1970 (or so). In 1980, he recorded for RCI and the result was "Bruce Murdoch", a fairly good record. Sharon & Bill, Bill Staines, Penny Lang (among others) have recorded his songs. He has lived in Alberta since 1977, with two years out to teach in the Northwest Territories.
Bruce surprised his audience last year at the festival with a c/d that just came off the press. “Matters of the Heart” is still being talked about as one of the finest to have come along in many years for folk lovers. Many folks are thrilled to hear that he is returning. Maybe, he has more surprises in store. Mar 12: Terry Joe Banjo
Back by poplar demand
Terry Joe frails on a long-necked Gibson 5-string and his innovative and exciting approach to melodic clawhammer banjo has captivated audiences for over 15 years. He is a natural performer, completely at home on stage. A fine singer,a gifted songwriter and an all-around entertainer that accompanies himself with a tap-dance shuffle while he plays and sings; the original song and dance man! Whether engaging a crowd in a sing- along, getting them up and dancing, laughing out loud or listening intently from the edge of their seat, every performance comes from the heart and leaves the audience wanting to hear more. With a plethora of songs at his disposal, from old country crooners to bluegrass breakdowns to new rock songs that were never before intended to be played on the banjo and also a slew of well-crafted originals, this talented multi-instrumentalist (plays guitar, mandolin, harmonica and dobro as well as banjo)is known for his tasteful accompaniment and innate ability to improvise. Fellow performers enjoy sharing the stage with him, which makes him a welcome addition to any festival stage or workshop. His debut cd ,Mountain Calling, has garnered critical praise and his banjo playing can also be heard on the award-winning animated short; Nibbles. In 2005, he won the Ottawa Folk Festival’s One-Fret-Less award in an open audition. He also can be seen with the hot country rock band, Desert Heat, and bluegrass darlings, Yonder Hill. Another interesting fact is that he can speak and sing in four languages… but usually he lets his banjo do the talking for him. Whether playing on a street corner or on a festival stage, his frantic frailing attack has left people amazed at the avalanche of notes he commands from his instrument. The blur of his rapid right hand has been compared to that of the wings of a hummingbird and it’s been exclaimed that it even makes lightening jealous! Mar 19: The Kitchen Shakers
Featuring multi-award winning recording artists Kevin Mark and Dale Boyle, The Kitchen Shakers deliver a repertoire of upbeat, fun and engaging roots music.
Together, Kevin and Dale hold no less than 25 music industry awards and nominations for their respective contributions to the blues and folk genres on Canadian and International levels. Kevin Mark was voted Quebec's Male Blues Artist of the Year in 2006 and is the recipient of the Lys Blues Live Act Of The Year Award a record-number four times in the past five years. “Kevin Mark leads with that booming voice and some great guitar”, says USA’s Blues Revue magazine. Carolina Sounds Beach Show (USA) proclaims “when it comes to boogie ‘n blues, nobody does it like Canada’s Kevin Mark”. Dale Boyle is considered "one of the best to emerge from north of the border " by Americana Homeplace (USA) and “an accomplished musician, a fine singer, and an exceptionally thoughtful, meticulous songwriter” by Canadianblues.ca. He is the winner of the 2005 and 2006 Lys Blues Folk Blues Artist of the year award, and his songwriting skills have earned him the 2007 International Narrative Song Competition and 2008 Lys Blues Songwriter of the Year award wins. This musical collaboration enables the Kitchen Shakers to dig into a multitude of Americana influences... and they do just that on the band’s debut release “Deep Fried and Countrified”. As proudly stated in the album’s first tune, the Kitchen Shakers will rattle your cupboard doors and have you stomping the ground... So push the furniture aside and turn it up loud – we gonna have us a kitchen party! Mar 26: Saskia & Darrel + special guest Gary Fjellgaard The fact that Saskia & Darrel often tour with Canadian music Icon Gary Fjellgaard speaks volumes about their abilities as musicians and song writers. Gary is well known throughout the music industry as being very "fussy" about his sound and the integrity of his show. On their own, they are a powerful presence in their field; winning Top 5 people's choice awards, hitting the #4 spot on MSN radio's National top 30 countdown, and being nominated for Album of the year and twice Aboriginal artist of the year in their new home of Saskatchewan. Their music is blithely described as "Prairie Roots", "Canadiana", and with a little "Dutchgrass" thrown in. They enjoy abundant airplay on local country radio as well as CBC and CKUA from all of their 7 full length cd's and have held #4 & 5 spots on MBC radio's National top 30 countdown. They are gearing up for a second tour of Europe as well as another trip across Canada from Vancouver Island to the Maritimes. Darrel is a Metis songwriter whose tales of Louis Riel, David Thompson, and "Sailing Saskatchewan" are striking resonant chords in our Canadian National identity. His masterful guitar playing is honed from decades of playing clubs 6 nights a week, 4 hours a night; work that just doesn't exist for musicians today. Saskia emigrated from the Netherlands with a powerhouse set of vocal chords and a passion for music and performance that has sustained her for many years as a working musician. Her incredible range, perfect pitch, and the ability to sing in five languages sets her far apart from the average vocalist. She brings to the mix adroit skills on guitar, bass, and pennywhistle. Under the shelter of their own company "Positive Note Productions" they are cultivating an immense following across Canada & Europe, winning over their fans one small town; one country hall at a time. Avril 2 april: David Hill & Dvorah Neumann + Ron Campbell David, who resides in Howick, Que is a dedicated composer/songwriter who plays the guitar and lap steel, with the peddle steel soon to be added to the list. He has already played with the “Hearts of Country” band and a gospel band called “Numbers”. Ready to venture out on his own, he is committed to share his personal style, for others to hear. Music has always been a part of David’s life through his father’s involvement in the church gospel choir/band, where he took the opportunity to become familiar with the instruments. David’s preferred style of music is a combination of country, blues, folk and rock. Blended with his distinct style of singing, he brings a fresh flavor to the stage that is uniquely his own. David takes pleasure in harmonizing with friends, and captures the opportunity to include them in his performances.
Dvorah Neumann
When Dvorah isn’t mothering her two sons or working as a Family Life Coach, she is fulfilling her creative passion for composing songs. Ever since she can remember, Dvorah has always had a song in her heart and a love of music that kept her constantly dancing. It has only been recently that words & melodies have come into fruition. Dvorah, known to her friends as Debbie, knew she was on her way to producing creative work when she met up with legendary folk singer/song writer “Penny Lang” and sang to her a composition in acappella. The strangest thing about this story is that it took place on a bus, while both where bound in the same direction. Dvorah, who had waited a long time for this opportunity, seized this moment. It paid off, because legendary Lang invited her to sing at that year’s “Branches and Roots Folk Fest”, during the gospel hour. From there Dvorah’s musical career unfolded to produce a couple more songs. Now, with Café Namas Thé’s open mic night, she is motivated to explore the boundaries of her musical abilities. Come share in her passion while she débuts an array of her work for others to enjoy. Ron CampbellBorn in Brownsburg Quebec then moved to Chateauguay. Following this move he then relocated to Huntingdon and this is where he resides today. Ron has been entertaining folks with his guitar, banjo and mandolin for a number of years. His repertoire includes Country, Gospel and Bluegrass. Ron’s love of Gospel has given him his trade mark and he continues to perform at local festivals and many churches. He also does a Gospel Show on Radio 760 a.m. So get ready to clap your hands and join in his energetic set of music.
