Local Swimmers Rock the House in Norwalk

posted Dec 6, 2011 5:34 AM by Connecticut Aquatic Club Swimming

20 local swimmers from the Connecticut Aquatic Club (CAC) attended the 2011 Betty Philcox Invitational hosted by the ZEUS Swim Team at the Pat Spinola Natatorium at Norwalk High School in Norwalk, Connecticut. Six other CT Teams were in attendance.

The meet spanned 3 days. Coach Christine Pelham had the team attend only Friday evening and Saturday. The attendance goals were to have fun and use the meet to gauge the swimmers progress from both a conditioning and technique perspective. The kids demonstrated they were up to the task and more. CAC swimmers exploded placing in the top 5 spots 70 times with 17 firsts, 16 seconds, 15 thirds, 16 fourths, and 6 fifth places finishes.

Very notable performances were turned in by CAC 8 year old swimmers competing in the 10 and under group on Saturday. Swimmers Emma McCall and Abby Vetrovec scored many top 10 finishes while competing against 9/10 year old swimmers.

CAC’s Girls 11-12 Relay team took the top spot in the Girls 200 Medley Relay. Alexis Dumais, Michelle Saracovan, Erika Rohdin and Lea Koppermann swam a 2:20.77 to take 1st place. Michelle Saracovan brought parents to their feet with a come from behind finish in the relays final 50 free leg. In the weekend’s standout performance, Saracovan made up a 2 body length deficit in the relay’s last 50 yards. At the finish, the only thing louder than the team’s cheering was Michelle’s victory smile to her teammates.

CAC’s 15-Over Boys Relay team took the top spot in the Boys 200 Medley Relay. The boys dressed for the event in tuxedo styled Speedo suits. Billy Dumais, Andrew Janz, Logan Hellwig, and Adam Tran showed that hard training and quality coaching far outpace fancy warm-ups suits and ersatz newscasts when it comes to competitive swimming. Swimming to impress, the Boys 1:50.37 earned them the top spot.

CAC’s Meet Spirit Award went to Ledyard’s Jordan Legg. Jordan (13) a Connecticut Top 16 Swimmer and CAC’s top 13-14 Boys Division swimmer refused to let being under the weather keep him sidelined. Jordon, although not feeling his best had solid finishes in the Boys 13-14 Division 50 Free (29.14), 200 Free (2:16.27) and 100 Free (1:02.85).

Also seen in the great North Country Swim “Throw-down” were great swims by East Lyme’s Ryan Dumais, North Stonington’s Lea Janz, Mystic’s Emily Tran, New London’s Cat Ward, Westerly’s and Sam Rea.

East Lyme's Ryan Dumais (14) returned to CAC this year. At Dover, Ryan swam in the Men's Open Division (13 and older swimmers). This is a tall order for a young swimmer and Ryan proved he was up to the task. Ryan's never-quit, hard charging attitude earned respectable finishes in the 200 breast, 200 back, and 100 breast. Ryan already demonstrates stamina and with continued effort on his form, his “ain't-over-till-it's-over” attitude will pay dividends in the upcoming short course season.

North Stonington's Lea Janz (13) got hit with a swimmer's double whammy this year. Lea grew six inches and aged up to swim in the Girls 13-14 Division. While she narrowly missed Age Group cuts in many events, Lea swam strong at Dover. Swimming in the Woman's Open Division, Lea showed excellent stamina and form with a great finishes in the 200 breast and 400 free. Watch for Lea as she releases the beast in the upcoming short course season.

Mystic's Emily Tran (13) was also whammied this year. She joined Lea with a growth spurt and ageing up as well. Emily's demonstrates near perfect form. Her starts are lightening fast and she is usually the 1st swimmer away from the starting blocks. Like Lea, at Dover she swam in the Women's Open Division. She had strong finishes in the 200 back and 100 breast.

New London's Cat Ward (14) one of the most popular swimmers on the CAC squad, had strong finishes in the Woman's Open 100 back and the 100 breast. As Cat ages up into the Girls 15-Over Division, her CAC training and her hard work will provide a solid foundation for her swimming ambitions.

CAC families enjoyed a fabulous weekend as they watched our 9 attending age group swimmers strut their stuff placing in the top 5 places 32 times.

26 CAC Swimmers headed north to complete at the Jenny Thompson Invitational Swim Meet hosted by Seacoast Swimming Association in Dover, NH on July 15 - 17, 2011. The meet was held at the Jenny Thompson Competition Pool, an outdoor, 50 meter facility. Twenty two teams from all over New England attended.

The event of the weekend was CAC 8-U swimmers Emma McCall and Abby Vetrovec swimming to a spectacular 1st place tie in the Girls 8-Under 100 Back. Griswold's Emma McCall (8) and North Stonington's Abby Vetrovec (8) brought the fans to their feet with a tie for 1st place in the 8-U Girls 100 Back both finishing with a 1:41.43.

Emma also placed 1st in the 50 Fly (49.01) and the 50 Back (46.64). McCall also placed 2nd in three events; 50 free (42.06), 100 Free (1:34.22) and 100 Fly (2:08.93).

Pawcatuck's Wes Rea (10), placed well in the Boy's 9-10 Division. Wes placed 1st in the 200 Free (2:52;75). Wes also placed 3rd in two events; 50 Free (35.67) and 200 IM (3:29.18). Also dazzling at Dover were fine swims by Westerly’s Joe Sullivan, East Lyme’s Michelle Sarcovan, East Lyme’s Alexis Dumais, and Waterford’s Zora LaBonte.

Westerly's Joe Sullivan (10) had a first class showing in all his races in Dover. On the Boys 9-10 Division, Joe placed 6th in the 200 free, 8th in the 100 breast, 9th in the 50 breast, and 10th in the 100 free. Joe's strong finish in the 200 free shows the characteristic stamina of CAC swimmers and also real improvements in technique.

East Lyme's Michelle Sarcovan (12) is finishing her first full year with CAC. She joined CAC because she really wanted to get serious about her swimming. As a hard worker, she swims with CAC's senior swimmers. Her concentration on form and her work ethic in the pool has really paid off. Demonstrating excellent form and stamina, she finished 8th in the Girls 11-12 Division, 200 breast, 10th in the 50 breast, and 10th in the 200 free.

East Lyme's Alexis Dumais (12) returned to CAC this year. She quickly picked up where she left off becoming one of CAC's hard charging, competitive Age Group swimmers. CAC's focus on quality and Alexis's dedication to swimming right really showed in the 11-12 Girls Division this year. In Dover's extremely competitive field, she placed 11th in the 100 back, 13th in the 100 free and 200 IM, and 15th in the 200 free and 50 back.

Waterford's Zora LaBonte (11) is new this summer to the CAC squad. CAC's concentration on form and quality promise to pay big dividends for Zora, who enjoys a swimmer's gift. Zora is very tall and when it comes together for her, watch out. At Dover, she had strong finishes in the 50 breast, 50 back and 200 free
