SAN FRANCISCO INTERCULTURAL FIELD TRIP:
 A GREAT SUCCESS

Our San Francisco Field Trip was a great success (long but delightful).  We arrived at Pier 39, hit the Merry-g0-Round-slash-spinny-thingy (Awesome), walked through Fisherman's Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, UP UP UP and DOWN DOWN DOWN Lombard Street (all the while meeting several interesting characters) to Little Italy (North Beach) and then to Chinatown for the scavenger hunt...After Chinatown,
some folks  went shopping, and a group of us took the subway (BART) for Middle Eastern food at Old Jerusalem Restaurant, on Mission Street (yum)!  All-in-all a long, but wonderful day. I truly enjoyed spending the day getting informally hanging out, especially enjoyed watching those of you less familiar with the City. Also it was a great opportunity for the Danish students to interact with our class and get to know one another better (and they definitely helped stimulate our economy while in Union Square!)

**I think my favorite intercultural experience of the day was talking to "Dynamite" at Ghirardelli Square, a street performer named Norbert Yancey (but prefers to be called "Dynamite")--he has been in that same spot for decades, speaks about  15 languages (most fluently, and several more with just enough care to get you to throw change in his guitar case!) He charms you within about 15 seconds of meeting him. When he is not 'charming the streets' he teaches Kung Fu, and travels around the world playing music... Dynamite is a SF staple but is well-known and loved around the world.  He will be performing on Jimmy Kimmel in a few weeks--one very cool 'cat'!

Click Here for a clip of him singing in Farsi.

Last semester our class took a field trip to SF China Town and engaged in a scavenger hunt and banquet lunch at the Four Seas landmark.  This was a fun experience--more photos on the Blog!
