Athens Drive High School Curriculum Assistance Program
Special Programs Office 233-4049 Fall Semester 2010

Dear Parent(s) and Students,

Welcome back! The Fall semester is already upon us. The Curriculum Assistance Program has been designed to provide support in academics and the remediation of basic skills, provide instruction of test-taking strategies, study skills, organization, and self-determination, building positive relationships with students, and assisting students with assignment completion, papers, and projects required by general education teachers. In addition to academic support, general Curriculum Assistance classes provide small group and individual instruction in organizational, time management and study skills.

We recommend students and parents review and become familiar with school-wide and Wake County rules and policies stated in The Student Handbook. Please find time to review this handbook, many policies and rules have been changed or updated. You will also find the North Carolina Course of Study for various subjects on-line. The website is http://www.ncpublicschools.org/curriculum/.

In order to ensure an enviromnent that is conducive to learning, expectations and guidelines for Curriculum Assistance classes have been outlined below. All students are expected to comply fully with these guidelines.

• Arrive to class on time. The tardy policy will be strictly enforced.

• Come to class prepared to work.

• Be respectful of all persons.

• Electronic devices have been banned in the classrooms. (Unless it is a book on tape)

• Cell phones are not to be seen, used or heard in any classroom.

• Bottled water only. No other food or drink permitted.

• Computers are for academic use only.

All students are expected to provide their own supplies. The following is a list of necessary items for Curriculum Assistance.

• Assignment book

• 3-ring notebook or folders (per teacher request) and plenty of paper

• Pens and pencils

• Highlightcrs in various colors

Due to budget cuts, we are limited in our classroom supplies. We welcome any assistance that you can provide with the following items:

• Copy paper

• Tissues

• Notebook paper

• Gcrm-X hand sanitizer

It is the policy of Athens Drive High School to provide students with progress reports during the fifth week of each grading period. The dates for the Fall semester are the weeks of September 22nd and December 6th. Report cards will be issued on November 4th. Additional important dates are September 17th, October 22nd, December 3rd, February 11 th, and March 11 th, and April 8th, which are Early-Release Days. Also, October 1 S\ November 24, December 22nd and January 3rd are weather make up days, if necessary.

You can also access SPAN (Student Parent Access Network) to track your students' progress. However, a student or parent may obtain an update at any time by simply contacting us. If you would like to meet with us to discuss your child's academic progress, we ask that you call 233-4049 to schedule a conference. We encourage you to attend our Athens Drive open house on September 14th.

This year Athens Drive continues with SMART Lunch, which will be an opportunity for students to get extra help in their classes. SMART Lunch will provide opportunities for open tutorial sessions on designated days for extra help in class. There is a complete explanation of SMART Lunch and a schedule for Tutorials on the Athens Drive web site at athensdrive.com.

Due to the structure of Curriculum Assistance classes, students' grades will largely be based upon daily log entries and time sheets, periodic journal activities and notebook checks, and participation and attendance. There will also be a project and tests. Students will have a final exam for Curriculum Assistance. The Wake County grading scale and a breakdown of averages is provided below.

Wake County Grading Scale

A 100-93

B 92-85

C 84-77

D 76-70

F 69-below

Curriculum Assistance Averages

• Agenda 25%

• ParticipationlDaily Log 25%

• CA Assignments/Notebook 25%

• Projects/Tests 25%

Daily attendance is imperative for student success. It is difficult to obtain information, keep up with assignments, and acquire knowledge without being present in the classroom. The student is solely responsible for obtaining, completing, and turning in missed assignments due to absences that are in compliance with the attendance policy outlines in The Student Handbook.

Each student has a case manager who will monitor your student's progress, answer questions and set up meetings in regards to your student's needs and educational program. Please feel free to contact this person at any time.

Sincerely,

The Curriculum Assistance Team:
