Announcement
The Butternut Valley Alliance is hosting its first Summer Harvest Festival on August 13 from 3:00 - 6:30 p.m. in the Guy Rathbun Park, located behind the firehouse on West Main Street in Morris. The festival will feature the Morris Farmers’ Market and live folk and bluegrass music. Free samples of foods made with locally grown ingredients will also be available. The entire event is free and open to the public.
Entering its second season, the Morris Farmers’ Market includes vendors selling produce, meats, eggs, cheeses, baked goods and plants. The festival will also include displays and products from 10 other local vendors as well as craft demonstrations, children’s activities and free ice cream. There will be a “cornucopia raffle” consisting of farm produce as well as a seed and plant sale, and Vicky Lentz of New Lisbon will demonstrate wool processing. The purpose of the Summer Harvest Festival is to introduce the Butternut Valley Alliance to the community and to promote consumption of locally-grown food by increasing awareness of local farms and the related health, economic, and community benefits. The BVA encourages the preservation and protection of the environmental qualities, farming and cultural heritage, economic viability, open space, and village charms of the area reaching from Burlington in the north to Mount Upton in the south. “I think the festival is a wonderful idea. In this area, we need to do all we can to support our local economy. I congratulate the BVA for spearheading this event,” said Shirley Musson, mayor of the Village of Gilbertsville. “We hope the festival will become an annual event, which will boost the BVA’s goal of building a stronger sense of community,” said Bob Eklund, BVA co-chair. The festival is made possible by a grant from Pure Catskills’ “Buy Local Campaign,” the Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship, and others.
