Our Mission Statement

The Butternut Valley Alliance encourages the preservation and protection of the environmental qualities, farming and cultural heritage, economic viability, open space and village charms of the entire watershed.

Who We Are

We are a group of citizens who live within the Butternut Creek watershed in Otsego County, New York in the headwaters of the Susquehanna River. We take an interest in preserving all aspects of the quality of life in the valley.

Welcome to the BVA!

BVA Comments on the revised dSGEIS, January 2012

Please Join Us for our next meeting, which features a presentation on water quality in Butternut Creek.

The meeting will be held at New Lisbon Town Hall in Garrattsville on County Road 16 at 1:30 p.m. Paul Lord and Tim Pokorny from SUNY Oneonta will give us a presentation of last summer's research titled "Butternut Creek Sentinels, Pearly Mussels". Sentinels are those assigned to look over or guard something of value.  Pearly mussels are long lived animals (100+ years) that move through, breathe, and eat from the water.   Their presence tells us much about the condition of a waterway.  Lord and Pokorny surveyed several Butternut Creek locations in summer 2012 searching for four NY State pearly mussel Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN).  What they found was beyond what they could imagine.  It contrasts markedly with nearby waters.  We urge you to come hear this first public discussion of their results.

See below for a printable announcement of this event.
