They're here, they're here! Our duck eggs have arrived! It was such an exciting day. Mrs. Brandt brought in 2 adult ducks that were hatched right here at EKES. One was from last year. It was the white Pekin duck. The other duck, Bob, was hatched 5 years ago and spent some time living with Mrs. Huss. Bob is a combination of Pekin and Khaki Campbell. He LOVES to come back and visit. Here are some pictures from our exciting day. Male ducks have a curved DRAKE feather on their tail. Can you tell if these ducks are male or female? Ducklings take 28 days to hatch. We set 12 eggs.
I am working on some slideshows from the year. Here is one of our apple picking adventure last Fall.

We have been weather wizards in 1d. We are studying different kinds of weather. We are busy graphing the temperature inside and outside each day. We will learn about the water cycle and some wacky weather, too. We built a CLOUD INSIDE our class. It was awesome. Ask your meteorologist what they know about weather.

We ended the week on a high note. Randy Armstrong visited our school and shared some of his beautiful music. He played instruments from all around the world. He sang a song about PEACE..that had the word in over 60 different languages. Perfect! We already knew some of them. He is coming back next week and will visit our classroom on Monday.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a relaxing vacation. I know I did. My New Year's resolution is to keep the class web page current. I was unable to access it for awhile, unfortunately. It looks like we are up and running again.
I would like to thank the room moms for organizing a wonderful Japanese Celebration. We had such fun. Thanks to everyone who came to help or bring in food. The sushi was delicious! The twinkle light limbo was a hit! Thanks again.
We will continue our study of Japan in January. The peace crane leads nicely to discussions of Martin Luther King. We will continue to explore what we as individuals and a community can do to create and spread peace.
We will learn about some of the Japanese celebrations. Hina Matsura is Girls Day in Japan. We will also learn about Boys' Day or Tango-no-sekku. Click the Japan link to the left to learn more.

We've been learning about the author, Eric Carle. We have read many of his stories and watched a video where he showed us how he made his art. We tried our hand at making paper Eric Carle's way. We then acted out The Very Hungry Caterpillar for the school at a morning meeting. We were a total hit! Very proud.
Meet the travelers of 1d! We are off to a great and silly start in first grade. We are spending time getting to know each other and our classroom routines. We are building a community of learners that respect and care for each other.
You must have heard about our Monarch caterpillars! We have been feeding them milkweed daily. Five caterpillars crawled to the top of our butterfly house and made their chrysalis. Today one Monarch butterfly emerged. It was very exciting. We have been documenting their changes in a journal. It was a very exciting day!
Finding 'just right' books for your first grader can be challenging. This website offers a valuable tool for parents and teachers to search for leveled books. If you have questions about it, please ask me.
