David M. "Buster" Gean, Jr., my grandfather, was one of the great men of the world. Most of his life he worked as a farmer or a clerk at a co-op. He was never famous, except to the seventeen grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved and admired him. He never did some great work in the world that would be recognized by anyone outside his community of Oxford, MS -- except for providing a steady, unflagging source of strength for those whom he loved. He was one of the best men I have ever known. Papaw died on August 13, 2009, in the house he and my Mamaw built over forty years ago. I still cannot believe he's gone. |
