Welcome to The Inn Burtle. Grill and Bar. In the depths of the Somerset Levels lies an ancient lake settlement called "Burtle" (meaning Sand Dune) Although not immediately noticeable Burtle is on a hill. Not now accessible by boat and more recently neither by Canal or Railway. You will not find any wooden houses on stilts, but wild life abounds, Nature Reserves, Peat Workings, views of the Poldens, Mendips and the famous Glastonbury Tor and The Inn, Burtle, circa 16th century. Originally a Cider House,although now much larger the Inn has retained many original features from years ago. You can enjoy the warmth of real open log burning fires and the character of our beamed ceilings, tiled floors and exposed stone walls in the Restaurant. Some of the original cob walling can still be seen, along with lots of other interesting artifacts. Years ago a Skittle alley was added, now The Orchard Suite which has recently been refurbished, it is complete with its own bar and toilets and now makes an ideal venue for Weddings, Social Functions, Meetings and Conferences. A Patio leads off from the suite which is a wonderful sun trap from late morning onwards. The Taverna, for continental style dining and drinking, leads off from the restaurant. The Inn is haunted. There is a washer-women who has been seen in the restaurant by the char-grill. This corner is shown on the old plans as being the wash-house, there was a spell a few years ago when the gas taps on the grill would be turned on but not lit! Footsteps have been heard over the bar coming from upstairs when there is no one there. Look for the face in the panelling in the Bar by the fireplace. For the outdoor enthusiast the Inn is the home of Bluebell Cycle Hire where you can hire a mountain or Tandem bike. There are also children's bikes buggies and seats so the whole family can explore the beautiful countryside. Orchard Camping is located on nearly an acre of an old cider apple orchard at the rear of the Inn. There are views of Glastonbury Tor and The Poldon Hills, a very tranquil location. With excellent facilities and camping facilities for hire. |
