AVID

What is AVID?

AVID is an acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination.  It is a TREMENDOUS college prepatory course that helps students acquire study, organizational, and note-taking skills to help prepare them for entrance to and success in college.  A student has to come into AVID ready to learn and to  work hard. AVID students are held accountable for taking weekly notes,(C-notes), completing learning logs, and completing their assignment notebook DAILY.  AVID is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work.

AVID students receive a great deal of support through weekly tutorial sessions, with trained tutors.  Tutorials are held within the AVID classroom twice a week, as well as after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-4:00.  One of the main goals in AVID is to teach our students how to ask higher level thinking questions that will help them get to the root of their confusion.  We teach that it is easy to answer a question, but it is the process of getting to that answer, through deep questioning, that is the important factor in learning the material.

SECOND QUARTER BINDER CHECKS:  YOU WILL NEED 10 C-NOTES PER WEEK AND 3 LEARNING LOGS.  MAKE SURE ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOKS ARE COMPLETED AND SIGNED BY A PARENT DAILY.  GRADE CHECKS MUST BE COMPLETED AND SIGNED BY ALL TEACHERS, PARENT AND STUDENT WEEKLY, AS WELL.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS IN AVID:

·         Keep your binder ORGANIZED by utilizing your folders and tabs.  Check through it weekly and remove papers that are no longer needed

·         Take at least 2 C-notes every day.  This can come from a teacher's lecture, class notes, a movie shown in class, a homework assignment, a vocabulary review, or a study guide.

·         Make sure to complete at least 3 learning logs each week. WRITE WITH COMPLETE SENTENCES.

·         USE YOUR ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOK! Complete this daily at the BEGINNING of EVERY CLASS.  It should be signed EVERYDAY by a parent or guardian to ensure assignments are complete and turned in ON TIME.

·         Every binder check form has a grade check on the back.  Please complete this WEEKLY and have it signed by a parent/guardian and all of your teachers AFTER the grades have been written by the student.

·         TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AFTER SCHOOL TUTORIALS.  It is a great time to complete homework and to ask questions with any subject you are struggling with.
