Student Awards Ceremony

Where: Farmer’s Market Restaurant

When: Tuesday, March 10th

Time: 6:30 PM

Every spring we all get together to honor last year’s exceptional karate students. Awards are given for each class for children and adults.

This year’s award banquet is at the Farmer’s Market on Highway 49 (about one half mile south of the I-59 intersection.)  It is a casual “all you can eat” place with a variety of foods.  We will recognize outstanding student achievements with award presentations following dinner.  Dinner will begin at 6:30 PM.

There will be NO CLASS that night.

IOSSKA Membership

BKA is becoming a member of the International Okinawan Seibukan Shorin-ryu Karate-do Association.  Members receive a Seibukan Passport book to keep record of all their karate experiences.  This will begin your personal relationship with Hanshi Zenpo Shimabukuro and the rest of the Seibukan family.  Hanshi expects all members of Seibukan chartered schools to be members.

Amateur Athletic Union

AAU

Burnside Karate Academy is teaming up with the AAU to bring the students an added benefit to their karate program.

Upon the school and students becoming members we will be covered under an umbrella injury insurance policy.  Member students are provided a third party injury insurance program that covers any karate injuries you may incur while training at the dojo or participating in an AAU event.  If the school and students are all members they consider every class, seminar, and AAU event as a covered event or training session.  There is also limited coverage for travel to and from all training sessions and events.

This is not a primary plan, but will pay out of pocket expenses past your deductible on your own health plan.  If you have no medical insurance the AAU plan becomes your primary coverage on a karate injury.

IOSSKA/AAU Membership

BKA has decided to combine the two memberships into one fee of $50 per year.  Please pay your membership at your earliest convenience.

Home

Zenpo Shimabukuro

The day before the AAU Nationals, June 16, Zenpo Sensei will be teaching a karate seminar to Seibukan students.  This would be a great event to take the whole family and have a fun Florida vacation.

Tournament Season

2009

AAU State Tournament will be March 14h, at the downtown Jackson YMCA not far from the Coliseum.  You must be a member of the AAU to participate in the tournament

AAU Regional Tournament is scheduled for April 25th; the location has not been established.

2009 AAU National Championships are in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, June 17 - 21.

The State and Regional competitions are required if you plan to compete at the 2009 AAU National Championships.

If any adult students or parents would like to become an AAU Certified Coach they can do this by attending classes and taking a certification test at the National Tournament.  Coaches are allowed to be on the competition floor with the competitors; this is a big help to our students.  Coaches must complete a certification course and pass a test on the AAU karate competition rules.  This is a great way for the non-competitor to get involved with the karate tournaments.  Volunteers are always needed for time keeping and clerical duties at the tournament.  See Sensei Burnside for details.

St. Jude Fundraiser

We are planning another St. Jude Fundraiser this year.  This year’s event is planned for Saturday, April 18th and will be held at the Wesley Medical Center’s Wellness Center.

All students and parents are invited to be part of helping the children at St. Jude.  St. Jude is one of the best charities for helping cure catastrophic childhood diseases and cancer.  It is a remarkable place where miracles happen.

We need volunteers to get started on this year’s St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Fundraiser.  We need volunteers for the following:

-          Selling ads for the program

-          PR and promotions

-          Program editor

-          Table workers (day of event)

-          Parent helpers (day of event)

At this event all of our students will perform karate demonstrations.  To be in the demonstrations we ask students to collect funds for St. Jude.  A tally of collected funds will be announced at the end of the festivities.

This is our 11th fundraiser for St. Jude.  Burnside Karate Academy students have given over $32,000 in the past 10 years.

The dojo will be giving three prizes for the students that raise the most money for St. Jude.

1st Prize - 6 private lessons from Sensei Burnside (a $150 value)

2nd Prize - JUKA Bronze gi ($100 value)

3rd Prize - $25 of karate gift certificate
