Hello there, and WELCOME!

BAV is a predominantly gay semi-competitive volleyball league that has been in existence in Buffalo, NY for over 25 years.  We take pride in the diversity of our players, which includes both gay and straight men and some women of all ages, races, and ethnicities.  Players’ skill levels vary from purely recreational to upper level/competitive, so what the coordinators try to do each night is divide the teams as equally as possible so there can be a mixture of skill levels on each team.  This gives everyone an opportunity to play with different people each week while helping the “lesser” skilled players learn from the uppper-level players.  Once again, though, you do not need to be the world’s best volleyball player to still play and have a good time…the league respects those players who want to remain at the recreational level.  In fact, one of our core values and beliefs is for all people to have a healthy alternative to socializing, making friends, and sharing interests.  (If you are a competitive player, though, and you are interested in gay volleyball tournaments around the country, check out www.nagva.org for more information.  Some of our players do travel to a couple gay v-ball tournaments, and you may want to do so too!)

We play every Thursday night (Sept. thru end of June) in the Maryvale School Binner Gymnasium, 1050 Maryvale Drive, Cheektowaga (right building as you pull into campus).  (Go to www.yahoo.com or www.mapquest.com for specific driving directions.)  Times change throughout the season due to school events, so please check our Facebook page @ http://www.facebook.com/pages/Buffalo-Alternative-Volleyball/188886591182277 . Generally we play 2 1/2 to 3 hours, and the cost is $5 each week.  Since we are not on a set playing schedule, you have the flexibility to show up and leave at any time on Thursday…however, we hope that players who can make it on time do show up at the start time so we can begin playing as quickly as possible.  School lockers are available for changing, but separate bathrooms also are available for those who desire more privacy.  Water fountains and a vending machine are located in the school, but feel free to bring your own beverage.  BAV operates under the rules and policies established by the Maryvale School System.  Thus, cigarette smoking and alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the premises.
