House Fires and Your Pets

House Fires as Disasters:

Locally, house/apartment fire is the most prevalent form of disaster to strike our area!

While considering general animal disaster preparedness tips (for disasters such as hurricane, floods, etc…), the most important thing to remember is: Do not leave your animals behind! That means when an evacuation for hurricanes, floods, etc is ordered leave early and take your pets with you.

House fire is a different type of disaster! If your home is on fire and you can safely and quickly exit the building immediately with your pets, then do so. In a house fire do not stay in a burning building looking for your pets. If you quickly exit the building and call the Fire dept/ 911 that is the safest thing to do. Then the professional fire men can safely help to rescue your pets in a house fire. You do not help yourself or your pets by putting yourself in danger during a fire.  Also, it is good to have a pet rescue decal on your home to alert fire fighters and rescuers that pets are inside, in the event you are not home when fire or disaster strikes.

The Importance of Pet Rescue Decals:

I'm sure you're all aware of the devastating apartment complex fire at River Walk in Conshohocken. Many people and pets were left homeless, although, thankfully, no human lives were lost.

There were too many pets that perished in the fire. They died despite the valiant efforts of firefighters, who rescued many pets. But firefighters' efforts were hampered because owners were not home when the fire occurred, and no one knew which apartments had pets inside.

To prevent this type of disaster from happening again, there are some things that people who live in apartments or houses can do to protect their pets.

Put a “Please rescue my pets” decal on the front door or window of your home. This alerts firefighters or rescuers to save your pets in case of fire or disaster if you are not home when the fire or disaster strikes. This decal could have alerted firemen at River Walk.  Had they been in place, many more pets could have been saved.

If you would like more information on how to obtain these decals, or for more information on animal disaster preparedness, contact the Bucks County CART (County Animal Response Team) at: buckscart1@earthlink.net.

There are many types of "Rescue Pet" decals. It doesn't matter what kind you have as long as you have one. It is smart to put one on a few different windows, or your front, back and/or side doors.
