In the event of a pandemic flu out break (or other disaster that requires people to shelter in place instead of evacuating) -
Some helpful information.
If you are ordered to stay home indoors or shelter in place.
DO not go out side, and (or follow the instructions given to you.)
keep your animals inside too. In the event of a disaster other than pandemic flu, you may possibly need to keep your animals inside the whole time (the same as is ordered for you).
Check official instructions specific to each event.
Pandemic flu does not affect or infect pets, so they cannot “catch” it. Dogs can be let outside in your yard, safely .But you should stay inside, at home and or do what is recommended for you to keep yourself and human family safe.(see officials instructions for you).
Have 2 week supply of pet food and water on hand in your home pet disaster kit.
Have 2 week supply of any medications your pet takes.
Have enough pet supplies, cleaning supplies, cat litter ECT…. For your pet, so you won’t have to go out and buy it.
Have pet first aid kit and book.
Keep your pet confined at home in the yard or in doors, so they will not become separated from you. (And you will not have to go out, after them).
Follow instructions given by officials for you and your family.

Disaster Preparedness for Livestock Owners:
During a disaster, the behavior and activities of livestock can change dramatically. EVACUATE LIVESTOCK WHENEVER POSSIBLE. Arrangements for evacuation, including routes and host sites, should be made in advance. Alternate routes should be mapped out in case the planned route is inaccessible. Evacuation sites should have or be able to readily obtain food, water, veterinary care, handling equipment and facilities.
- Trucks, trailers, and other vehicles suitable for transporting livestock (appropriate to the type of animal) should be available, along with experienced handlers and drivers to transport them. Whenever possible, the animals should be accustomed to these vehicles in advance so they're less frightened and easier to move.
- If evacuation is not possible, a decision must be made whether to move large animals to available shelter or turn them outside. This decision should be determined based on the type of disaster and the soundness and location of the shelter (structure). All animals should have some form of identification that will help facilitate their return.
- Your disaster plan should include a list of emergency phone numbers for local agencies that can assist you if disaster strikes - - including your veterinarian, state veterinarian, local animal shelter, animal care and control, county extension service, local agricultural schools and the American Red Cross. These numbers should be kept with your disaster kit in a secure, but easily accessible place.
