Block Unit 1035 Garden

Welcome to the website for the Block Unit 1035 Community Garden.  Located in the Skinker DeBaliviere neighborhood, across from Hamilton School, in St. Louis, Missouri.

For driving directions, use 5888 Westminster Place, St. Louis MO  63112.

The garden has 27 raised beds, tended by local residents.  It also has a center garden and flower beds in the front of the garden.

Garden plots are available for next year!    Contact garden organizer,  Mark Banaszak at bu1035communitygarden@gmail.com or 314-863-0965.  If you are interested in helping with the organization, planning or work of the garden, please contact Mark.

Here's how it works:
  1. Get a Plot:  Contact the garden organizer to find out if there any plots available.   If there are plots, agree on the plot that you will tend for the year.  (Each plot gets renewed at the start of the growing season.  If you are a returning gardener, you get first dibs on your plot or on any available plot.)
  2. Pay the Fee:  Each plot is charged $10 to cover the cost of the water bill during the growing season (after the last frost until mid-November, roughly).  The water is turned off over the winter, so that the pipes do not freeze.
  3. Tend the Shared Garden:  There are shared portions of the garden, and these are maintained by all gardeners.  To do this, we schedule 6-8 Saturday workdays during the growing season.  On the workday, you will tend the shared portion of the community garden, along with your plot.  Most people stay for about two hours on a workday; the workday is scheduled to last 4-6 hours to accommodate everyone's schedule.
  4. Maintain Your Plot:  It is also important that you keep your own plot tended.  The community garden is a part of the neighborhood and is only a contribution when it is well-tended.
  5. Reap Your Rewards:  The flowers and vegetables that you raise are your own to keep, you may also cut flowers from the shared garden (so long as you leave flowers for your fellow gardeners and for the beautification of the garden).
For more information, and details on how the garden works, check out How our garden grows.

The Community Garden is an important part of the Skinker DeBaliviere neighborhood, and benefits from the students at Washington University who are often participants in the garden.  It's a wonderful mix of people.  Please join us!

The Block Unit 1035 Community Garden is a part of the community gardens supported by Gateway Greening.
