Sir Edmund Hillary Statue - The Hermitage - Aoraki / Mount Cook
The statue of Sir Edmund Hillary was commissioned by the Hermitage, Aoraki / Mount Cook in 2003 to commemorate Sir Edmund's anniversary climb of Mount Everest.
Bryn Jones is a leading New Zealand figurative sculptor who specialises in representative work. He lives on the Otago Peninsula at Broad Bay.
This statue was completed in a 7 month time frame and cast at the Dunedin School of Fine Art using the lost wax technique.
Sir Edmund Hillary unveiled the sculpture on his last visit to Mount Cook. He shook the sculptors hand and said:
"You have made a great job of this lad and I don't say that to many people."
