Community Service Opportunity:

If any students want to volunteer, the YMCA Southeast Branch is looking for volunteers to work their Haunted Branch on Saturday, Oct. 17th from 8-10pm.  Parents are welcome to help out as well. 

Call Paul McKim or Shelia Ash @ 491-9622 or go to the YMCA Southeast branch and sign up.  

YMCA Southeast is located at 5930 Six Miles Lane.

If you would like to attend this event, it is Saturday, Oct. 17th from 8-10pm.

The Brown School PTSA 3rd Annual Walkathon and Pot Luck will be held October 17 at Waterfront Park at the Brown-Foreman Amphitheater (near Tumbleweed) from nine until noon. PTSA’s objective in moving from catalogue sales to the walkathon was to have a fundraising activity that builds community.  Flyers have been distributed and posters displayed highlighting the many fun activities planned for the day.

7th Grade Science:

HW Monday – finish air pressure handout (2 pages front and back) remember you need your green textbook to answer the questions on one of the pages.

 

7th Grade Social Studies:

HW Monday – read 3-3. 

Make a list of at least five Sumerian achievements and how they affected the society.  

We will complete our study of Mesopotamia this week and will have a test next week.  Tentative day is Tuesday.

 

8th Grade Washington DC Trip

I have been getting lots of questions about the trip.  At this point I have booked our lodging but cannot make airline reservations until later in the month.  We are leaving on Tuesday, March 23 and returning on Friday, the 26th.  I do not know times yet.  I am working with someone new and trying to keep the cost below $500. 

 

If you want to go ahead and make a $100 deposit or any other payments, please do.  When I have firm prices I will let you know about payment schedules.  Refunds can be made up until about 6 weeks before the trip.  Make checks to Brown School.

GLUE THIS IN THE FIRST BLANK PAGE IN YOUR JOURNAL.  THEN DO EACH TASK ON A SEPARATE PAGE.  Label, label, label….everything and write AWSOME explanations….Journal and practice will count as a grade!!!

A.  Draw a 3-D rectangular prism with the dimensions of Length = 6, Width = 3, and Height = 8.

·         Explain/show how you determine volume

·         Explain/show how you determine surface area

B.  Draw a 3-D rectangular prism with the dimensions of Length = 4, Width = 2 and Height = 6.

  • Use graph paper to draw a “net” / “flat pattern”
  • Label top, bottom, side, side, front, and back
  • Calculate volume and surface area.

C.  Draw a 3-D cylinder with a radius of 3 and a height of 6.

  • Draw a flat pattern/net of the cylinder.
  • Explain how you calculate the volume and show your work.
  • Explain how you calculate the surface area and show your work.

D.  Cindy wants to package 100 cubes of chocolate in a rectangular prism.

  • What dimensions will produce the largest SURFACE AREA???  HOW DO YOU KNOW???  What is the surface area?
  • What dimensions will produce the least SURFACE AREA????  HOW DO YOU KNOW???  What is the surface area?
  • List 2 additional combinations of dimensions and calculate surface area.

E.  Explain how you will find the dimensions of a cube that has a volume of 19,683 sugar cubes????  What is the surface area?  Explain.

 

F.  The area of a face of a cube is 81 square inches. 

  • How do you find the dimensions of the cube?
  • How do you calculate the volume of the cube?

G.  The booster club wants to know what container to use for popcorn.

Which container should they use?  Each container will cost $.01 per square inch.  Find the surface area, volume and COST of each of the following containers.  (Remember: There are no tops to the popcorn boxes.)

  • Cylinder with a height of 8.5 inches and radius of 1.75
  • Regular Rectangular prism with a height of 8.5 inches and base width of 2.75 inches
  • Regular Triangular prism with a height of 8.5 inches and base width of 3.7
