Community Service Requirement

 

Each student on the 8/7 team is required to volunteer 12 hours to a civic minded organization.  In addition to exposing students to a variety of work opportunities, we believe that community service is an important element in helping young people to become responsible adults in a democracy.  We hope that you will support us in meeting this goal for our students.

 

Guidelines

1.  TWELVE hours of community service count as 20% of your social studies grade for the fifth grading period.  Verification is due by April 12, 2010, however, hours may be turned in at any time before that date.  Hours submitted after grades have been recorded will not be accepted for credit.

 

2.  Community Service verification sheets can be obtained from Sharon.  These must be signed by the supervisor of your work and may be turned in to Sharon at any time.  You may use another form such as a letter from your supervisor if it is on the organization’s letterhead.

 

3.  Volunteer work should be outside of school time and with an organization that is not supervised by someone in your immediate family. 

 

4.  Students should volunteer their time to a community - oriented, non profit organization.  Although helping neighbors, friends and relatives with babysitting, yard work, etc. is kind and generous, it does not qualify as “community service”.  Volunteer work at a church is fine as long as the work is helping out with the church community not as part of the worship service such as singing in the choir.

 

5. If you would like to design your own project, please submit your proposal to Sharon for approval ahead of time.  These may be e-mailed over the summer to sharon.voelker@jefferson.kyschools.us
