In 2007, Wayne Thomas and Mike Evans led their respective teams into battle with equal handicaps of 90. Thomas needing 4.5 points to retain and Evans needing 5 points to win outright. Finally poised at 1-2 after the pairs, the order of play for the following days singles matches was announced over dinner and threw up some hum dingers. The two lowest handicappers on each team would lock horns in match 1, society chairman Vs secretary in match 3 and the Captains squaring up in match 5. The stats simply don't tell the full story and what happened on the 18th green will go down in Cyder Cup history. With all other matches completed and the scores finally balanced at 4-4, the Captains were still out on the course and arrive at the 18th green all square with the Cyder Cup in the balance. With Captain Thomas lagging up to a foot, his opposite number Evo has a five foot putt to win the Cyder Cup......it slides by the hole and Thomas has a tap in for victory......except its not a tap in, its a putt for the Cyder Cup and as the club is taken back, nerves take control and the putt dribbles to the side of the hole and with it the Cyder Cup changes hands…in the words of Chris Kamara...UNBELEIVABLE! A great game, played in great spirit…and one that will live long in the memory. |
