The Forest of Arden was the venue for the eagerly anticipated return of the Cyder Cup in 2005, with the event growing from 4 to 8 golfers. Captaincy had been handed to M Jameson and K Skinner and with it, the headache of how to handle their rookies. The pairs matches took place on the Championship Arden Course and proved a tough test for all. Jameson bravely put his rookies out first pitching Wayne Thomas and Colm Evans against now Cyder Cup veterans Delves and Skinner. With the rookies not quite gelling, Skinner and Delves closed the match out early with a convincing, 4&3 victory. It was quite a different story in match 2, where Skinners rookies Evans and Cook took Jameson and Tout to the last, with Tout missing a short putt for the win and providing the opposition with a crucial half point. Needing only 2pts from an available 4 in the singles matches, Skinner went with experience again at the top of the order and was rewarded with victories in both of the opening matches to secure the cup. Skinner out first defeating Thomas and Delves overcoming Jameson. Subsequent wins for Tout over Cook and C Evans over M Evans for Team Jameson didn’t soften the blow. If we learned anything during the Fire at the Forest it was that experience was crucial at the now legendary Cyder Cup. |
