The Inaugural Cyder Cup took place at the Belfry in 2004, host to the Ryder Cup on no fewer than 4 occasions. A four man event in it’s inauguration, founding Captains Tout and Delves were responsible team affairs and the all important orders of play. The pairs match on the famous Brabazon ended all square, with Jameson holing some crucial putts coming up the stretch to clutch a half from the jaws of defeat. Like the Ryder Cup itself, the Cyder Cup is all about momentum and the half point earned by Tout/Jameson must have felt like a victory, while Delves/Skinner were left considering what might have been. Attentions turned to dinner in the Atrium restaurant when the Captains revealed the singles draw, which saw Jameson taking on Skinner in match 1 and Tout taking on Delves in match 2. Although Jameson was a strong favourite, it was Skinner who got out of the blocks first taking the lead, never looking back and putting his team in a dormie position at 0.5 Vs 1.5pts. Down to the Captains then……Tout prevailing by a single hole to appropriately draw the first ever Cyder Cup. No one was to know how the event would grow over the coming years, but the legend of Cyder Cup was born. |
