Sponsors The following corporations and individuals have graciously sponsored portions of this event: | Contest Parameters: *Sustainable Blacksburg and its sponsoring partners invite you to re-imagine the wooden pallet – a potential source of building material, art media, fencing, yard art, acoustical lining, roofing, and so much more! The hope is that by re-imaging the wooden pallet, we can reduce the number of wooden pallets in landfills. Awards will go to the top three entries in each category. Pallets are available free of charge to all entrants (see list of suggested locations in the entry form packet). Deadline for entering is Friday, September 17. It is anticipated that top entries will be compiled into a booklet and/or web site for the public to access and utilize. Enter one, two, or all three of the following categories! 1) Reuse of Pallets in Full Form Outline your best concept for how wooden pallets can be re-used in their full form, for example, as compost bins or fencing. This category does not require a physical model. Send (1) a sketch or other graphic representation; and (2) written instructions for how the structure might be assembled. 2) Pallets Reused in a Modified Form Show us how! Disassemble the pallet(s) and create something entirely new and useful. The re-invented item must be made predominantly of wooden pallets. This category requires you to provide (1) the finished model created with actual pallet materials at full-scale; (2) photos and/or sketches of the construction process; and (3) written instructions for how the item was constructed. 3) Reused Pallets in a Work of Art “Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it,” said Robert Motherwell. Enrich the world of recycling with your artistic reuse of wooden pallets. This category requires you to provide (1) your created work of art; (2) an artist’s statement reflecting on the piece and how the pallet materials are employed. Judging: Entries will be judged by an independent panel of judges representing Sustainable Blacksburg, the Town of Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. All entries will be judged on the following criteria: 1) Ecological impact resulting from materials, process and use; 2) Functionality; 3) Potential lifecycle; and 4) Aesthetics. Entries Must Include: 1) Entry Form (Please see "Entry Form" website page) 2) Entry Statement 3) Idea (Reuse of Pallets in Full Form) or Item (Pallets Reused in a Modified Form or Reused Pallets in a Work of Art) Questions? *Sustainable Blacksburg is a collaborative community partnership to promote informed and effective environmental stewardship in the Blacksburg area. Members represent local government, Virginia Tech, student organizations, local businesses including architectural and engineering firms, private citizens and non-profit organizations. Monthly meetings take place at noon on first Wednesdays, but there are many opportunities to work on areas of special interest, in small groups -- all are welcome.
**Caution:
There is always a chance that pallets could be contaminated so they should be inspected for possible contamination (oil, etc). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends that all wood sanding operations use a mask for protection. Safe handling practices (gloves, eye protection, etc) should also be utilized. Pallets should not be re-used as anything that will come in direct contact with food (salad tongs, bowls, etc).
