Bridgwater Choral Society
The Choral Society has been at the heart of the cultural life of Bridgwater since it was founded in 1949 by conductor Rex Browning with the aim of providing music of quality in the town and district. Early performances were in the Arts Centre and Town Hall, later moving to the fine parish church of St Mary’s, where the choir continues to perform two major choral works from the classical repertoire each year. The high standard is reflected in the engagement of professional soloists and orchestra for these concerts.
The Society has been fortunate to have been led by three outstanding conductors - Rex Browning, William Llewellyn, and currently Iain Cooper. A highlight for the choir was to sing in Worcester Cathedral as part of the Three Choirs Fringe Festival, appearing on BBC Radio 2's "Friday Night is Music Night".
The Society celebrated its 60th Anniversary during the 2009/2010 season.
