BCC Ladies Play First Match

posted Jul 22, 2011 7:25 AM by Charles Ewen

BCC Ladies played their first match on Wed 15th June.  Making good account of themselves against a Lewdown side with some experienced players, Bridestowe did well to be competitive.  With some good skills on display, Lewdown proved just a bit too strong for BCC Ladies but there where some good home performances that bode well for future fixtures.

Tamar Colin Kirby Cup Win

posted Jul 22, 2011 5:19 AM by Charles Ewen   [ updated Jul 22, 2011 7:53 AM ]

Bridestowe were victorious in the final of the Colin Kirby Cup against Calstock. Bridestowe won the toss and asked Calstock to bat first on a poor wicket at Whitchurch. They were in early trouble as Alex Jopling and Tom Fogerty reduced them to 25-5.  The Calstock middle-order staged a slight comeback, but man of the match Dave Jopling took 4-11 to restrict them to just 72, probably at least 30 short of a competitive score.

Bridestowe set out to chase the total in sensible fashion, going at a steady 4 an over, however loose shots and good catching in the deep left Bridestowe in trouble as both openers departed in quick succession. The match was effectively ended as a contest as Jack Hatton struck a six followed by another boundary to leave BCC needing less than 20 to win.

Bridestowe got home with 5 overs to spare, 7 wickets down with Alex Jopling making it all look easy with a fine leg glance for 4 to finish the game.

Jacko leads the charge

Bridestowe recorded a comprehensive victory away at Buckfastleigh, against a Plymouth CS & Roughborough side who are placed well above them in the table.

Winning the toss for only the second time of the year, the visitors bowled first on another wet pitch, and devastating early spells from the ever reliable Tom Fogerty (12-2-30-4) and left arm paceman Dave Binns (12-3-30-2) reduced the hosts to 24-5. Plymouth Captain Dave Bayliss then dug deep to play his way to 73 until he was smartly stumped by Mark Fogerty off Jutson in the closing overs. The hosts were able to accelerate in the closing overs but Lee Juston came back from an expensive first spell to take 3 late wickets, helping to restrict them to 145-9 off 44 overs.

In reply, Bridestowe got off to a shaky start, as the usually reliable Phil Woods edged behind for 9 in the third over with both opening bowlers utilising plenty of pace and bounce in the surface. Jack Hatton played confidently, surviving some difficult chances, to make a brisk 63 before he was bowled by the left arm spin of Bayliss. He was well backed up by all of the top order who played well around him. Bridestowe got home 5 wickets down in the 34th over, with Tom Fogerty hitting the winning runs fortuitously as he was dropped off the leading edge.

Next week is an important one for the club, with a T20 game at home against local rivals Okehampton A, followed by the Colin Kirby Cup final at Whitchurch against Calstock. The 1st XI are home to Countess Wear, 2nd XI away to table topping Plymouth CS & Rob and finally the annual village 7-a-side tournament at the Millaton Ground on Sunday.

Banger’s Big Bike Ride 2011 - Get Involved

Banger’s Big Bike Ride 2011

Generally more used to wielding a cricket bat than donning a pair of cycling shorts, first class cricket legend Marcus Trescothick will later this year be taking to the saddle in support of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

With one CHSW fundraising cycle already under his belt, this latest challenge –  sponsored by Clydesdale Bank – will have Marcus riding from Bristol to St Austell over five days, from Monday 26th to Friday 30th September. Each day will feature a lunchtime stop at a local school or college where Marcus will share some experiences from his illustrious career as well as passing on some tips of the game to the pupils. Marcus will also be stopping off at each of the three CHSW hospices in the region on the way down from Bristol to Cornwall. Throughout the ride he is hoping to be joined by some well-known faces and in addition there is the chance for supporters to sign up and ride with him for a day.

Marcus said………….

"I first got to know Children's Hospice South West back in 2008 and have tried to support them as much as possible since then. Being the father of two very active young daughters myself, I wanted to try and help other less fortunate children if I possibly could. I am completely in awe at the wonderful work that all involved with CHSW do to support life-limited children and their families and it has become a cause very close to my heart.

“Last year I joined in with a few friends for a day on a fund raising cycle ride for the Charity, ending with a visit to the children's hospice in North Devon. This year we are going to make it into a week-long event, cycling across the region from Bristol down to Cornwall. I am looking forward to meeting lots of different people right across the region throughout the week, and will hopefully be able to help a little in increasing people's awareness of Children's Hospice South West and what they do.  However, most of all I am looking forward to meeting the families, children and staff when we visit all three Children's Hospices in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall on our way. They are the real stars and I hope that you will join me in helping to raise some much needed funds to support this wonderful cause."

Dates of the ride and the daily stages are as follows :

Monday 26th September : Bristol to Taunton.

Tuesday 27th September : Taunton to Barnstaple.

Wednesday 28th September : Barnstaple to Exeter.

Thursday 29th September : Exeter to Plymouth.

Friday 30th September : Plymouth to St. Austell.

We shall be covering around 60/65 miles per day on average, starting around 9.30am. Allowing for a lunch-time stop of around 90 minutes, we would expect to finish each day around 4.30pm.

There will be a limited number of places available each day for members of the public to join Marcus and friends on the ride. If you would like to join us, please email Marcus at Bangersbikeride@gmail.com or telephone event coordinator Eric Cole on 01626-334965 or 07712-227809, stating on which of the five days you would be interested in riding. We shall then be able to send you full details and an application form so you can decide whether you wish to sign up to ride. Please note that the deadline to apply for places is 31st July and if we are oversubscribed for any of the days, we shall decide the allocation of places by ballot.

The main sponsor of the event is Clydesdale Bank, and we are most grateful to them for their support. Just to make sure that Marcus completes the whole ride, Clydesdale Bank are sending their Brands and Sponsorship manager Steven Hunt along to ride the whole way with him.

We would also like to express our grateful thanks to many other businesses who have given their support to the event, including the following : Ashcourt Rowan Plc, Old Mill Accountants and Financial Planners, Sporting Vision, Eurocams Ltd., Westaways Sausages, Six Cycles, Somerset County Sports, Exmoor Ales, Redback Cricket and Paul Jewels.

If you are unable to join Marcus on the cycle ride itself, you can still sponsor him. Please see our fundraising page at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/MarcusTrescothick

Thank you.

First XI Post First Win

posted Jun 12, 2011 7:38 AM by Charles Ewen

Bridestowe 1st XI recorded their first win of the season in a rain affected match, away at Whimple. The visitors lost the toss and were put into bat on a damp pitch. They were soon in trouble as Phil Hatton edged a swinging delivery from C.Palfrey to slip in the first over. But from then on, Scott Tremain (51) and Phil Woods (70) battled hard to reach 50, and then played some excellent shots off the back foot, to bring up the 100 in the 26th over. Tremain was then caught at mid off attempting to increase the run rate and wickets started to fall in quick succession, as the new batman looked to find the boundary. Woods remained in control as the score approached 200, when he was finally dismissed, Jack Hatton (30n.o.) took control, playing sensible shots and running well between the wickets. This pushed the score up to an impressive 208-6 from the 42 overs, pick of the Whimple bowlers was P.Hope (12 overs 2-40). In reply, the Whimple openers were watchful early on as Fogerty brothers Tom (7 overs 3-25) and Daniel (6 overs 1-16) bowled consistent lines on a helpful pitch. Tom soon got the breakthrough with the score at just 23. From then on wickets tumbled, with Jack Hatton (4 overs 2-29) and Phil Hatton (4 overs 3-10) both getting wickets with their very first deliveries. The pair continued to cause havoc and the final wicket was soon claimed by Neil Griffiths, capping off a fine team performance. The hosts had managed just 83 all out from 23.5 overs, with T.Griffin (16) providing the only real resistance. Bridestowe (20pts) Whimple (3pts).

Good Work Butler!

Thanks to Mark organising the quiz for BCC at the White Hart we raised over £200, a fairly even split from entry and draw prize money.  It was a little bit disappointing in terms of the number of players that supported the quiz but luckily the village and supporters turned out in force.

If you where one that 'couldn't make it', please bear in mind that it costs a lot of money to run the cricket club and having reduced sub's and match fees this year we need your support in fund-raising so please turn out (and bring friends and family) for the next 'Cream Teas' event.

Thanks to the White Hart, Bridestowe and Graham and Jenny Crocker for arranging the quiz.

Also thanks to Lewdown CC who supported the event with a team.

YOUNGSTERS SHINE IN OPENING DAY THRILLER

By Ian Townsend

Francis Clark Devon League D Division

Ottery St Mary 221-5dec. (G.Biggs 106*, M.Kirk 30, J.Clements 25, S.Forbes 23, L.Jutson 2-66) Bridestowe 215 (T.Fogerty 47*, C.Ewen 40, P.Woods 27, N.Griffiths 25, P.Hatton 24, S.Loud 5-60, W.Harrison 3-64). Ottery St Mary (20pts) bt Bridestowe (7pts) by 6 runs.

Despite the ravages of the early season weather and the absence of key players on both sides, Ottery St Mary 1st XI and visiting Bridestowe produced a fascinating contest shaded by the home side as bad light and rain closed in. Hugely encouraging for followers of both clubs will be the fact that talented youngsters dominated the contest. Star billing goes to 17 year old Otters’ opener George Biggs, who struck his maiden league century, whilst team mate and Devon U-15 leg spinner Sam Loud claimed five wickets. And for the visitors 16 year old Tom Fogerty produced a fine all-round display, backing up a steady bowling spell with a terrific unbeaten innings of 47 as he shared a heroic but ultimately fruitless last wicket stand with No.11, Charlie Ewen.

Ottery were given a solid start by Biggs and Steve Forbes as, in contrast to Tom Fogerty’s tight opening spell (0-12 from 7 overs), left armer Mark Butler was struggling for line and length. The openers efficiently despatched the resultant loose deliveries as well as running particularly well between the wickets to post a stand of 58 before Forbes (23) was removed by the Jutson brothers, his sliced drive off Lee’s bowling flying to Ian in the gully. The incoming Matt Kirk was immediately on the attack, his run a ball 30 including a big six over extra cover. With Biggs batting in beautifully controlled fashion the 100 was passed in the 23rd over before Kirk miscued the hard working Butler to Trevor Oats at cover. Home skipper Jody Clements then assumed the aggressor’s role, reaching 25 from just 18 balls (4 x 4s, 1 x 6) before he was deceived and bowled by a full length Lee Jutson outswinger. However, Biggs was now driving the ball splendidly on either side of the wicket and, in the company of 1st XI debutant Alex Thurgate, he took the total to 185 before the latter was run out for a useful 15. Rob Johns (4) soon departed as his booming lofted drive off spinner Jimmy Ewen was nonchalantly pouched by Butler at wide long off, but the total passed 200 in the 41st over. Shortly afterwards and to great acclaim, a single to mid-wicket saw Biggs reach the magical milestone of his first league century (11 x 4s, 117 balls) before Clements chose to declare with the total at 221-5 and three overs remaining – a competitive score but one which would have been significantly larger had it not been for consistently excellent Bridestowe ground fielding. Tom Fogerty was the pick of the visiting bowlers (1-44 from 13 overs).

In reply, the extra pace of the Otters opening attack was initially to the liking of visiting openers Phil Hatton and Phil Woods who posted a 52-run opening stand before left armer Will Harrison adjusted his radar to claim three victims in quick succession. First Hatton (24) was well pouched behind by Alex Clements before Wood (27) was comprehensively yorked and Jimmy Ewen (2) was also caught behind. From 65-3 the aggressive Neil Griffiths, in the company of skipper Mark Fogerty, took the total past 100 in the 21st over before the introduction of Loud prompted a collapse. The guile and flight of the youngster bamboozled a succession of batsmen. Mark Fogerty (15) was bowled by a looping leg break, Ian Jutson (0) top edged a full toss to third man, Griffiths (25) was castled having a slog and finally Oats (3) edged behind to Alex Clements. Off spinner Nick Doman joined the party as he castled Lee Jutson (6) and, when Loud captured a maiden 1st XI ‘fivefer’ by bowling Butler (0), the Otters appeared to be home and dry with Bridestowe on 144-9. However, a combination of gutsy batting from Tom Fogerty and Charlie Ewen and appalling catching from the Otters saw the visitors edged towards an unlikely victory. Whilst Ewen produced a series of lusty blows as he benefitted from three dropped ‘dolly’ catches off the unfortunate Jody Clements, young Fogerty batted with admirable control, striking four boundaries in an excellent 47 not out. In awful light, the stand reached an incredible 71 before Ewen’s brave knock ended at 40 as he missed a low full toss from Clements.

The lucky Otters therefore scrapped home by a mere six runs in a terrific contest played in a wonderful spirit and a dull evening was lit up by the glowing pride of the young Biggs who reflected on his red letter day by observing, “It’s brilliant, an amazing feeling. I’ve dreamt so much of scoring a hundred but I never thought it would happen today!”

Otters’ Man of the Match – George Biggs.
