A new take on traditional Chinese wish making. In collaboration with Li Xiaoqian. May East and West bring you blessings / 2009 / printed silk mounted on dibond panel / 100 x 100 cm / edition of 4 + artist proof (A dragon appears from behind the cloud of burning incense that billows out of a bronze cauldron of the 'ding' type, unfolding a scroll to the reverential figure on the right, on which one reads in old Xiaozhuan script 'Zhongxi Hebi', meaning 'East and West combined'. The word 'ding' is homophonic with the word for 'must', thus emphasizing the importance of the message, the symbols on the three carpets mean 'happiness, fortune and longevity'.) May your divorce be happy / 2009 (On the low table we see an ananas cut in halves. Ananas is a pun for the word 'to leave'. It refers to the breaking up of a marriage, represented by the bamboo and plum arrangement in the vase on the floor. Contributing to this message is the scene depicted on the big screen; in the middle panel we see the 'god' of marriage holding a loose red string, normally the string which binds together the bride and groom, symbolized by the two mandarin ducks on the left and right panels, clearly going their separate ways. The bats are a pun for happiness.) Soon to come: May all officials be perfect back to homepage |
