Participants in this project who will present at Breaking the Silence:
Jay Coghlan leads one of the nation's most effective grassroots nuclear watchdog organizations, scrutinizing nuclear weapons budgets and plans at the Los Alamos (LANL) and Sandia nuclear laboratories and across the nation-wide nuclear weapons complex. He has been central to stopping radioactive incineration at LANL; obtaining public review of the nuclear weapons complex; and winning a 16-month injunction against an advanced nuclear weapons design facility. More recently he prompted independent expert review of plutonium pit lifetimes that concluded nuclear weapon “triggers” last a century or more, double previous DOE estimates. That finding led to subsequent Congressional rejections of new-design nuclear weapons and expanded plutonium pit production Geographic Expertise:

presentation on the U.S. nuclear weapons complex and how the Kansas City Honeywell
Plant functions within the complex. The KC Plant produces or procures 85%
of the non-nuclear components that make up a nuclear warhead, including firing
and arming systems, radars, guidance systems, reservoirs for tritium, foams,
and adhesives. KCP states that it now has its busiest workload in 20
years. Much of this work is for "Life Extension Programs" for
existing weapons.
