Think Outside the Bomb

The KC Plant Project is a coalition that has come together to publicize issues concerning the Kansas City Honeywell Nuclear Weapons Plant, currently located at Bannister & Wayne in KCMO.

Issues are:
  1. Lack of protection and compensation of workers, their families and the community to toxic contamination, resulting in serious illness and deaths
  2. Lack of community input and environmental study re: the proposed relocation of the Plant and abandonment of the current Plant
  3. Lack of public knowledge re: the Plant's part in the continuation and expansion of making weapons of mass destruction and its risk to the survival of all life on the planet. This is the flip side to global warming - a nuclear winter that will make the Ice Age look like springtime.
Participants in the project use a variety of means to bring awareness of the issues to the public, including weekly protests at the Plant, presentations at local colleges, testimonies at hearings, media contacts, and the internet

Participants in this project who will present at Breaking the Silence:
  • Maurice Copeland, retired 32 year employee & supervisor at the Plant
  • Ann Suellentrop, Physicians for Social Responsibility - KC
  • The Recipe, spoken word poets
  • Sahj Kaya, singer and poet,
  • Jane & Henry Stoever, journalist and lawyer activists,
  • and special guest, Jay Coghlan, Nuclear Watch of New Mexico
We have a multi-media presentation that includes informative speeches, poetry, song, projected DVDs, 30 posters (showing the devastation of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki), and written materials. It may be possible to have a live web-conference with a survivor from Hiroshima, or at least a recording.

Jay Coghlan leads one of the nation's most effective grassroots nuclear watchdog organizations, scrutinizing nuclear weapons budgets and plans at the Los Alamos (LANL) and Sandia nuclear laboratories and across the nation-wide nuclear weapons complex. He has been central to stopping radioactive incineration at LANL; obtaining public review of the nuclear weapons complex; and winning a 16-month injunction against an advanced nuclear weapons design facility. More recently he prompted independent expert review of plutonium pit lifetimes that concluded nuclear weapon “triggers” last a century or more, double previous DOE estimates. That finding led to subsequent Congressional rejections of new-design nuclear weapons and expanded plutonium pit production

Theodore “Priest” Hughes and Desmond “3-3-7” Jones, life time poets and also ten year veterans in performance poetry, came together and launched in 2005 as a duo poetry team known as, The Recipe. “We chose to work in a team format to encourage peoples to work together towards common goals. We believe that by exemplifying excellence and team work as spoken word artist/activist we can influence change”. The Recipe quickly became known for its dramatic heart felt chemistry during performances. Incorporating multiple artistic mediums to heighten the social conscious message becoming known as Dramatic Art n Rhythm,”We combined props, music and theatrical interpretations with spoken word”. Audience acceptance and appreciation led to winning many local poetry slams, opening doors to do featured performances around the Kansas City, Mo area and nationally. The Recipe has performed for youth programs, Fund raisers, Class Reunions, Theaters, Arenas, Churches, Schools, and Night Clubs.

Nuclear Weapons: Future Directions
By Jay Coghlan, Maurice Copeland, and The Recipe

Jay Coghlan from NukeWatch New Mexico will give a presentation on the U.S. nuclear weapons complex and how the Kansas City Honeywell Plant functions within the complex.  The KC Plant produces or procures 85% of the non-nuclear components that make up a nuclear warhead, including firing and arming systems, radars, guidance systems, reservoirs for tritium, foams, and adhesives.  KCP states that it now has its busiest workload in 20 years.  Much of this work is for "Life Extension Programs" for existing weapons.

Maurice Copeland, a former Plant worker and supervisor, will discuss the health problems the workers are having related to the contamination at the Plant.

The Recipe will perform spoken word pieces about the Plant and related issues.

January 9, 2010 ~ 10:00-11:45 AM

What Happened to Hip Hop?
By The Recipe

The Recipe will teach a workshop where participants will produce their own spoken word compositions.

Creating a Nuclear Free World
By Ann Suellentrop

Ann Suellentrop and Alicia Dressman will discuss ways people can become involved in working for a nuclear-free future and why this is so important at this time.  They will present the various treaties involved in creating a nuclear free future, such as the CTBT, START, and the NPT.
