No Child Left Inside
By Dr. Gary G. Andersen
Remember building that fort or tree house or hiking through the woods?
Many contemporary children do not have such experiences. They are
simply found where the electric outlets are. Recent attention has been
focused on the value of having experiences in the outdoors and of unstructured
play. This workshop will review recent concepts and literature about the
value of outdoor experiences and the effects of our changing society on our
children. A program at Wyandotte High School known as Camping as Learning
will also be described. A discussion will follow about what concerned
citizens and educators can do as advocates and facilitators of outdoor learning
and play. The presentation and discussion will be lead by Dr. Gary G.
Andersen, Science Coordinator for the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools.
Dr. Andersen has been a science educator for 33 years and has a wealth of
experience in environmental education and learning.
