Self Portrait with Installation. For our 3-d design final we were given the simple guideline of creating a three dimensional artwork based on the idea of "A place to put your head", one that would relate to the dimensions of the human head, the body. For my piece, I chose to work continuing the visual style of the SSV set we designed for our last show, but minimized and reduced to a lesser scale piece. In addition, I installed this work around my bed so it was, in fact, a serene, imaginative, dreamy little place to rest one's head (or whole body for that matter). Interestingly enough, this mirrors my old drawings in black and white on cardboard from last year and earlier this year, almost exactly. Hanging stars and a moon and trees, all approximated here to cardboard and real suspended branches and christmas lights. This imagined landscape motif has been in my mind since I was a tiny child, and I think I am just now gaining enough life-long experience with it to finally be able to realize it in reality, not just in two dimensions as I had been the past couple of years. It is quite surreal to sleep under this, as it is something of a dream come true, like falling asleep in and around the realms of my imagination, like falling asleep in one of my own artworks. I feel that this will be a solid form of installation/decoration in my rooms and living spaces throughout my life, and that it will change and develop and twist in time, and that eventually I will be able to really bring the world of my mind into more-or-less reality around myself, which will be incredible. NOTE: That is my bed that I am seated on, I sleep on a gym mat on the floor for more space in the day and because I dislike beds for the most part. This hangs right over my head, in my tiny half of a tiny dorm room (definitely against fire hazard codes, but it's in the name of ART!). What you see here is my entire (basically, except for three or four feet of desk and bureau) half of my room. CLICK "all sizes" in the bar above the photo to see it blown up. Twenty-Four/365.
There are 12 more days until I get to go home. I went to the hospital today and I thought it would be smart to walk on my Converses through the snow for almost an hour. Not a good idea Ian! haha. Then I had lunch at KFC (Which I havn't been to for about 3 years I think) and I went to see if I am still able to move to a different dorm next semester. I don't know what I will do tonight. Probably finish a 6 page paper that is due for Thursday for my English class. God help me.
