6690 HIGHLAND PARK RESERVOIR WILL BE DRAINED ON FRIDAY, JUNE 27 The City’s Water Bureau will begin draining the Highland Park Reservoir on Friday morning, June 27 to inspect the source of a suspected leak. Water Bureau staff have noted that the ground in some areas around the reservoir has become soggy. Water Bureau staff conducted tests to confirm that the ground water surrounding the reservoir is coming from the reservoir. It is estimated that the water is leaking from the 27-million gallon reservoir at a rate of approximately 50,000 gallons per day either from an inlet pipe underneath the reservoir that is used to fill it or from a small crack in the reservoir’s floor. “This leak does not pose any immediate concerns,” said Dept. of Environmental Services Commissioner, Paul Holahan. “It will take approximately three weeks to completely empty the reservoir and it is expected to remain out of service all summer. The City utilizes multiple storage and delivery systems so water quality and water supply will not be affected.” The valve to the inlet pipe has been shut off and more than half of the water in the reservoir has been utilized in the supply system. City crews will begin opening valves to drain the remaining 11 million gallons water out of the reservoir at two locations: at Mc Lean Street, near Wilson Blvd., where the water will then run into a catch basin at the corner of Wilson Blvd.; and from a blow-off connection in Highland Park near Doctors Rd.
