FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!!!  *(5/9) A HISTORIC HAPPENING IN THE CORNER OF NORTHERN VA, THANKS TO A LIVING LEGEND On Saturday, May 5th, a 21-year monkey was lifted off my back. Probably explained all those unexpected back spasms over the years. By no means did I know what to have expected while walking up to the Shearton National, just a few minuted via Metrobus from Pentagon City. Once inside, the festive atmosphere of folks dressed to impress what met with one of the biggest assortment of Arabs and Middle Easterners I've ever seen to attend a bellydance event. But they weren't just attending ANY event. Thanks to SaryStars (based out of Baltimore), the DC area bellydance communities also gathered (selling out her weekend of workshops, including an in-house contest won by two ladies from Canada, who came all the way down for the festives as well) to see DINA's 1st ever appearance in DC. Warmed up by a resounding singing and musical exhibition displayed by MOHAMED REDA and HOBA beforehand, the legendary bellydancer roamed out to the runway-like stage just after midnight to an eruption of cheers and zaghareets, in her signature style of dance (and elaborate costuming choices) that has solidified her as Egypt's blessed gems of the art form. To say the very least, anything that you have experienced of her on DVD or on YouTube or other videoclip engines pales in comparison...and yes...I was there to see ''The Facials''. :) AKA, her unique, one-of-a-kind use of facial and physical expresiionalism of the music (although used to performing behind musicians and orchestras that at times almost outnumber the audience she dances for back in Cairo on many a weekend) were on-point like never before. She danced with an energetic ignition as she did when she 1st started her illustrious pro career. By the way, I don't think I have EVER seen folks (bellydancers and/or audience members) get up and dance their asses off the way they did during Mr. Reda's opening act. For many in the Middle East, dance is a release of emotions that is a cultural and hereditary way of life, and that was put on FULL display that night. All in all, the night was about one of the best entertainers (who also showed her comedic side, speaking in Arabic for the majority of the crowd, including many famous Egyptian actors who live in the US who came down as well) who left the stage giving people wanting more. The frenzy of dancers and folks wanting a photo was so massive, they had to clear the stage shortly after. I can't tell you how HUGE this night was for this area. Folks who knows me well knows I have trumpeted wanting her presence here for more than two decades, and got to ''live the dream'' finally, and is forever grateful to all involved for making this happen. Many of dancers from Sahara Dance (DC) and Saffron Dance (VA) were also in attendance for most of the weekend's festivities. It is too early to know if this will lead to return engagements, but this is a big feather in the cap for SaryStars to establish themselves as an elite promoter for bellydancers of Egypt/Middle east for future concerts to come. It is ''believed'' that the next big city that will land DINA will be New York City, possibly later this year or in early 2013. One of their 1st major gigs was at DC Tribal Cafe last month. 2 of the foursome are known already in the area, KINIKIA (VA) and BRENA BELLYDANCE (MD). Tons of fun is in store, more will be revealed after RKB finishes wining down from ''Desert Moon'' & ''10th Anniversary Withdrawl'' symptoms. :) Stay tuned... ====================================================================================== *(4/26) CARRYING THE TORCH OF THE ART FORM THROUGH THE TAX FREE STATE One of the bigger personal joys for me at Art of the Belly last month was taking an early AM walk (right before the death stench of fog let up to reveal a nice shower bomb trying to approach the shores) and actually walking across Coastal Highway INTO Delaware, being able to say I was physically IN the state for the 1st time. :)~ Now, if I can only find time from work to ATTEND A SHOW for bellydance in the state, time will tell. And when so, it'll probably be with LORELEI, who has represented Newark, DE nicely for years with her monthly hafla held now at MOJO on MAIN (which I believe isn't far from the Greyhound and Amtrak terminals, and is a short cab ride to the joint as well...) She bedazzled all with her solo work at AOTB and may be (other than Shiraz) the hardest working bellydancer in the entire state. Her next hafla is May 20th (usually on the 3RD Sunday of the month, unless otherwise selected) featuring Rio of NYC (formerly of Central VA). Due to late personal restrictions that got in the way, she had to drop out of the 1st Project Bellydance competition (but was chosen to participate). Now, ITALIA, originally from Drakes Branch, is prepping for major things very soon, and has a wide range of abilities in cabaret(modern), tribal fusion, hip-hop fusion and Latin bellyfusion styles (and has said her next mountain to conquer will be traditional folk and Turkish style bellydance).
