Already a well-achieved performer in the area (Palace of Wonders, ArtMatic, Braindance I & II, etc.) she has a unique way of blending both ballet and modern musical tastes with the art form that transforms her craft into a special occurance every time out. She'll be at the Palace on THR 2/4 for Vixen variety's monthly show, hosted by Belladonna (VA). To learn more on Samantha, check out her YouTube channel for more.... ======================================================== *(1/31) THE NEXT BIG THING FROM ARGENTINA AWAITS TO BE HEARD :) The goddess country that has blessed us with Saida as well as producing national superstars here (one being Nathalie of South Florida) has many standout performers waiting to taste an internation acclaim, led by the jaw-dropping physical powers and energies of Romina Maluf, who like those mentioned, has performed with international famed drummer Mario Kirlis. Her YouTube channel is full of clips (in Spanish) showing her dance skills, and is a wonder to watch when it comes to drum solos!! Keep an eye out for Romina over the next few years, she's going to make a strong American impact in due time.... ======================================================== *(1/31) THE LEFT COAST DANCES TO A BEAT OF A BAND OF GREATNESS The Midddle Earth Ensemble, led by Frank Lazarro, has performed for numerous bellydance talents on the west coast and beyond, including Rachel George, Sabrina Fox and 2009 BDUC winner Dilek. OK, wishful thinking. But, it is a promising venture that a more updated, UNofficial representation online for Miss Kinali is now up at Didem.tv, tht will hopefully give more insight on her growing presence on YouTube and growth as a worldwide sensation. Thanks to the IBO Show and various club gigs in Europe in 2009, the demnd for Didem's place to bring a new generation's view of turkish bellydance to the United States is at a fevered pitch, and will only get bigger with each passing day...and videoclip. She already has enough YouTube clips to choose from (see my own personal playlist link at the top of my Playlist section), make some popcorn and open a drink, sit back and enjoy...and pry the day comes to actually get to see her in the U.S., if Mr. Tatises deems it redy to happen (wink-wink, nudge-nudge)....Rumors also has it that it's important for Didem to develop a personal life before venturing to the elite paths professional bellydance will take her, looking to get a degree in the meantime..... ========================================================= *(1/31) BRANDON HOPES HIS ''DYNAMIC DOZEN'' WILL EMBARASS HOLLYWOOD AND BEYOND TO GIVE US SOMETHNG BETTER TO LOOK AT THAN ANOTHER STUPID TABLOID SIGHTING OR A SLICE OF ''TMZ CANDY'' I have always been asked, and th debate has been rendered, who in Hollywood or in the celebrity genre would make awesome bellydancers, either on-screen or as an actul professional. Unfortunately, the truth is very little, because unless there's actual decent money or motivation involved, accompanied by the everyday stupidities of th entertainment and music industry's ''killer crossovers'' of associating bellydance with stripping with wicked dance moves meant for a stripclub in most music videios and calling it bellydance on the side. So it's better to live the fantasy and choose women who ''possibly'' take it seriously vs. those who just would look good in attire and has decent abs...hence the use of the term ''dynamic'', because it's better to imagne it than probably to actually see it. Unfortunately, DeLacey was snowed in in Delaware over the weekend, so Miss Bella nicely filled in to join Trisha McBride (who came all the way from Utah) and the blue-haired goddess Mavi for the 1st DC Tribal cafe of 2010 at Asylum Bar in Adams Morgan. McBride, with a ''voluptuously lean'' frame and killer hips is the furthest participant in the 4+ years of Tribal cafe (Frank Farinaro of CO at BellyHorror T.C. held that distinction until yesterday). ========================================================== *(2/1) 1ST ''EBONY NATION'', NOW CAN WE BRING BACK ''SOUL TRAIN''? :D Kudos to the amazing progress of international and local superstar Ebony of Sahara Dance, who in just a short time (feels like an eyeblink) has toured Europe legs of the Bellydance Superstars and has made numerous national trips with her Raqs Sahara dancemates. Ebony will be a feature dancer on THR 2/18th's Danse du Ventre at the Palace of Wonders in N.E. D.C. (aka, ''My Turf'' hee-hee-hee) at 10pm to dazzle all with her hip-hop fusion stylings and has grown into her own as a talented choreographer as well. yay, Ebony! :) ========================================================= *(2/1) RUBY HAS A WAY OF MAKING FOLKS PAY CLOSE ATTENTION... She's the zany one with unlimited muscle control and amazing start/stop pop and lock abilities as a soloist, if not as one of the ''fantastic 4'' that makes up Bellydance Soulfire of oregon (2009 BDNC Nationals Troupe champs). Months ago, she released a DVD through Michelle Joyce's Cheeky Girls Productions called ''Flawless Floorwork'', showing an added range that can improve your bellydancing to the next level. To learn more on buying the DVD (with a YouTube trailer clip) go HERE and check out Bellydance Soulfire (and info on her own website) HERE... ========================================================== *(2/3) THE EGYPTIAN SUN'S RAYS ARE BEAMING ALL OVER CHARM CITY It's hard to imagine that a surprise meeting and shared passion for bellydance between 2 Johns Hopkins University students would lead to so much, as is the case for current tacher/co-founder of Egyptian Sun Bellydance's Dori Witt (originally from St. Louis, MO). Along with Nikki Traylor-Knowles (originally from New Mexico), the 2 formed ESBD in 2001. next year will be their 10th anniversary in baltimore (Nikki left to Boston in 2005 to pursue her graduate degree at Boston University). She gets to travel down ocassion to perform at given JHU shows when her schedule has allowed her to. Dori and her ESBD efforts has helped produce a young casbah of local talents from those early days, including: Bastet (who performs at Desert Cafe on Saturdays), Kateri (who has danced in London and is a talented orchestral artist), Krista (who has done Artomatic DC shows in the past) and Brenda petersen (who got to be a featured dancer on weekends at famed Marrakesh in downtown DC on weekends in 2008-09). Current instructor and JHU student Ouranitsa, who made a splash at the pre-NBDC meet & greet in Novemebr is anxiously anticipating the annual Shriver Hall student show on May 1st, details forthcoming. As the countdown to a successful decade draws to a slow close in 2010, let's applaud Dori and Nikki's bond and love for bellydance that has blossomed far beyond their expectations, with more blossoming yet to be done. ========================================================== *(2/3) BELLYDANCER + COMIC BOOK GEEKS = SUPERPOWERS TO THE MAX! :D Amazing Spiral (formerly known as Comic Kingdom and the Oasis), doubles as a comic book store and a bellydance shop for those in the Baltimore area, located inside their new digs, Rotunda Mall at 711 W. 40th Street. (no knowings of bellydancer comic books on display as of yet). :D The site and store is overseen by the ''Comic Goddess'' Driana Pearlman, who is also a bellydance teacher and performer, and offers a wide assortment of bellydance items and accessories for local inquirers alike and abound, and has run the operations since 2002. For more on her bellydance offerings, click HERE for more details... ========================================================== *(2/3) GET READY BALTIMORE, BELLYPALOOZA IS MAKING A RETURN! ...and only three days before my birthday, at that. ;) A Facebook page set up for the event has announced that after a year hiatus, the gala Baltimore bellydance weekend, sponsored by Piper & the Daughters of Rhea will return on August 21st and 22nd, most likely again at the BMA (Baltimore Museum of Art), not far from JHU's Homewood campus location.And if we're lucky, we'll get a taste of ''bellydance's Oldest Teenager'', the ageless Rhea of Greece to join Piper and Melina and young princess Zoe Isadora for a performance night of Greek pride and comedic fufillment as the time draws near, and nice to see it return. ========================================================== *(2/3) I'M BEGINNING TO SENSE A BALTIMORE THEME TODAY, DO YOU? Three zaghareets (or cheers) for Eva Nadira of baltimore, for her tireless efforts to be the Shira or Salome of Charm City with maryland bellydance, a site that updates Marylanders and those on the eastern Shore/Delaware of events locally happening. The site's content and information on performances and workshops has grown greatly in the past couple of years (along with Nina Amaya's help) in making Maryland an infosource for bellydance on the web. AREA CANCELLED The Birchmere in Arlington, VA announced on its website that a visit from the ladies of The Indigo Dance Company (Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes and Mardi Love), scheduled for April 1st has been cancelled, with no scheduled makeup date, if any, yet to be announced. If you pre-paid thru TicketMaster, you should have gotten a refund. If you purchased thru the bvox office, you can get a refund at The Birchmere until April 15th. LSR (as affectionately known online) is scheduled to be in Pittsburgh on March 31st in at The Rex Theatre.... ======================================================= *(2/7) ALWAYS NICE TO HAVE A ''NEXT BIG THING'' BEFORE YOUR EYES She began her dancing career at the tender age of 15. She proudly balanced both cabaret/modern and tribal fusion styles of bellydance. If you talk to her, she is well advanced mentally on the aspects of the art form well beyond her years. Now, deciding to focus exclusively to Classical Egyptian bellydance and its sister genres, Shahrzad (originally from Delaware and now in the D.C. area) is taking the area by storm, a regular standout at Casablanca in Old town Alexandria, VA and performs as a feature on occasion at Club Babylon in Falls Churcfh, VA. Her raw passion to shimmy and vibrate (standing and traveling) are a sight to behold, and she is ever adding to her craft of 1,001+ moves (...and then some) with each passing performance. Rarely does a gem like this gets to move into your area and grow with her development and future rise of super stardom, and she's WELL on her way.
